A new, more modern and multifunctional building will be constructed on the site of the former Petros Adamyan Armenian State Drama Theater. This was announced by Georgian Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Giorgi Bakradze.
At a meeting of the Georgian government's Commission on Human Rights and Civic Integration, the Georgian Ombudsman's report "On the Human Rights Situation in Georgia in 2016" was presented, along with a report on the implementation of parliamentary recommendations. During the meeting, Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Giorgi Bakradze stated that it would be more appropriate to construct a new building on the theater's site.
"One of the consultations concerned the renovation of the Armenian theater. This issue has been raised very seriously with the ministry for many years, and the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Georgia has constantly mentioned it. I would like to note that restoration work has already begun. The Cartu Foundation (owned by former Georgian Prime Minister and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili) has fully covered the construction costs and has already allocated over 8 million lari. The Samkharauli National Bureau, which also drafted the reconstruction project, concluded during construction that the building was actually much more damaged than initially thought. A decision was made, coordinated with the theater's management, the embassy, and the Armenian partner, the ministry, that the Cartu International Foundation would undertake the demolition and construct a new building in its place. "The building will be more modern and multifunctional," Bakradze stated.
The Tbilisi-based media portal Aliq Media spoke with the theater's artistic director, Armen Bayanduryan, regarding this issue. He sees no cause for concern in this decision.
"When the concrete section of the building was demolished, it was discovered that cracks existed on every meter. After reinforcing them, the building would not withstand even a magnitude 4 earthquake, according to the seismic center. Furthermore, after the building is reinforced, cracks will reappear in 2-3 years. After this, philanthropist Ivanishvili personally informed the ministry and the theater's management of this, proposing to demolish the walls and construct a stable building on the site much more quickly and in the shortest possible time. "I don't understand what's so scary about that," Bayanduryan noted.
Recall that construction work on the building's renovation began in August 2017, and the theater's management temporarily transferred to the Griboyedov State Theater in Tbilisi. The theater building has been unused for six years now due to its dilapidated condition.
It should be noted that this is the only Armenian state theater operating outside of Armenia.
