In May 1997, Eduard Shevardnadze made his first official visit to Armenia as President of Georgia. During his meeting with Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the presidents expressed hope that a time would come when the Caucasian countries would resolve the conflicts in the region through joint efforts.
1997 թվականի մայիսին Էդուարդ Շեւարդնաձեի առաջին պաշտոնական այցն էր Հայաստան Վրաստանի նախագահի կարգավիճակով: Հայաստանի նախագահ Լեւոն Տեր-Պետրոսյանի հետ հանդիպման ընթացքում նախագահները հույս էին հայտնել, որ կգա մի ժամանակ, երբ կովկասյան երկրները համատեղ ջանքերով կլուծեն տարածաշրջանի հակամարտությունները:
