The Armenian Apostolic Church condemned Azerbaijan for denying the Armenian identity of Gandzasar and Dadivank and called the involvement of foreign diplomats "deplorable".

The Holy See of Etchmiadzin condemned on September 14 the statements made by Hikmet Hajiyev, an advisor to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. During a recent visit to the monasteries of Gandzasar and Dadivank in the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), Hajiyev denied their Armenian identity and presented them as belonging to Caucasian Albania. The Holy See denounced these actions as part of a policy of appropriating and destroying Armenian cultural heritage following the forced expulsion of the Artsakh population.

“The Holy See of Etchmiadzin strongly condemns the recent statements made by Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, during his visit to the monastic complexes of Gandzasar and Dadivank, in which he denied their Armenian identity and presented them as Albanian, as well as his mocking attitude toward the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Armenian people,” the institution stated.

The Holy See condemned the Azerbaijani official's statements as a falsification of history and linked them to the Baku authorities' policy toward Armenian heritage.

"These attempts to distort historical facts for political expediency constitute a blatant falsification and a violation of the historical memory and spiritual heritage of the Armenian people. Such practices are a clear manifestation of the anti-Armenian policy pursued by the Azerbaijani authorities," the Holy See stated.

The institution also maintained that "this latest propaganda visit is aimed at deceiving the international community."

Hajiyev toured Gandzasar and Dadivank accompanied by members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Azerbaijan and representatives of international organizations. The Holy See particularly questioned the participation of these officials in activities organized by the Azerbaijani authorities.

“It is particularly regrettable and worrying that foreign diplomats accredited to Azerbaijan and representatives of international organizations are involved in the dissemination of historical falsifications,” the statement said.

“The Holy See of Etchmiadzin hopes that they will properly assess the distortion of the identity of Armenian holy sites, the intrusions into the spiritual and cultural heritage of Artsakh, and the anti-Armenian policy, and that, through their participation, they will not contribute to justifying the policy of appropriating Armenian historical heritage,” it added.

The Armenian Apostolic Church recalled that it has repeatedly denounced actions against Armenian heritage following the forced expulsion of the population of Artsakh.

“The Holy Apostolic Church of Armenia has repeatedly warned that, following the forced expulsion of Armenians from Artsakh, the Azerbaijani authorities have pursued a policy of appropriating historical monuments, destroying Armenian holy sites, khachkars, and cemeteries, as well as destroying documentary evidence attesting to their identity. Hajiyev’s statements constitute yet another manifestation of this policy,” the statement read.

The Holy See also called for a response from the Armenian authorities regarding the situation of Artsakh’s cultural and religious heritage.

“The ongoing intrusions into the Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage of Artsakh must be properly assessed by the authorities of the Republic of Armenia, and effective measures must be taken to prevent them,” the statement affirmed.

Furthermore, it urged other states and international organizations to intervene to protect Armenian sites under Azerbaijani control. “The Holy See of Etchmiadzin urges friendly states and international and national institutions to do everything possible to prevent the destruction and appropriation of the ancient Armenian Christian heritage,” it stated.

“Establishing lasting peace in the region requires respect for faith, historical memory, and the fundamental rights of peoples,” the Holy See declared.

“Preserving the spiritual heritage of Artsakh in its entirety, as well as guaranteeing the rights of the Armenian Church and the people who created it, constitutes an inalienable international obligation,” it concluded.
