Winning or losing with time: editorial of Troshag, official organ of the FRA-Dashnagtsutiún

The meeting between Putin and Nikol Pashinyan on September 1, 2026, in Bishkek, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, proved a clear failure for the latter. Russian authorities, who for years had turned a blind eye to Pashinyan's maneuvers, made it clear that the golden age of double standards was over, and that the Armenian leader must now demonstrate with concrete actions whether he stands with Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union or with the opposing side.

Russia also openly mentions the specific losses Armenia will suffer if it joins the opposing camp: a considerable increase in gas prices (and perhaps a complete disruption of supplies to Armenia), and a similar outcome for imports of raw materials for the nuclear power plant, oil, diamonds, and other goods from Russia, which are supplied to Armenia at Russian prices. Russia could prohibit hundreds of thousands of Armenians from working abroad without authorization, forcing most of them to return to Armenia, which in turn could drastically worsen the social situation in the country. And that's not even mentioning the possibility that Armenian producers would be completely cut off from foreign markets and the devastation of the Armenian agricultural economy in the event of a permanent closure of the Russian market.

Nikol Pashinyan, returning from Bishkek, tried to portray the situation as if nothing terrible had happened, claiming that he had a practical and productive conversation with the Russian leader. He probably couldn't act otherwise, since, firstly, it demonstrated that, in order not to lose the elections, he had been deceiving the people in the preceding days, presenting a supposedly excellent relationship with Putin and the leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and assuring them that he would solve all the problems. Not to mention the promise to open the gates of the Western paradise to the Armenian people, which also turned out to be false shortly afterward. If Pashinyan had told the truth at least this once, he would not only have revealed to the people the stagnation of his opportunistic policies, but he would also have highlighted the extremely worrying outlook that awaits the Armenian people in the near future. That is why Prime Minister Pashinyan and his supporters have begun to proclaim that there is nothing to worry about, that Armenia is surrounded on all sides by countries with gas reserves, and that the Turkish-European alliance is ready to support Armenia in every way possible.

And this is happening at a time when, apparently in secret, Europe itself is importing gas from Russia through Azerbaijani pipelines. It seems that Nikol, aware of his defeat even before the elections, is stalling, perhaps clinging to the hope that an opportunity will arise. Regardless of the modest election results and the extravagant promises made abroad, Pashinyan realizes he lacks popular support at home and that the promises and results of his foreign backers are not comparable. In a weakened position with extremely limited opportunities, Pashinyan becomes increasingly dependent on external forces. To demonstrate his firm commitment to their policies, he is forced to publicly strain relations with Russia while simultaneously attempting to project cordiality in private meetings. It should be noted that, in doing so, he is primarily satisfying the demands of the main beneficiaries, the Turkish-Azerbaijani alliance, which aims to expel Russia from Transcaucasia.

It is no secret that, in Armenian-Turkish relations, Pashinyan has long adopted the role of Turkey's advocate, against the interests of his own country and people. Pashinyan not only defended and justified the war crimes perpetrated by this alliance, persecuted and punished the heroes of the Artsakh war, but also continues to suppress any initiative planned in Armenia on behalf of Artsakh and its rights. Through his policies, he not only contributed to Azerbaijan portraying the struggle for self-determination of the Artsakh people to the world as an Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan for purely aggressive purposes, but also, through his current silence, contributes to Azerbaijan's reckless destruction of Artsakh's Armenian historical, spiritual, and cultural heritage.

Furthermore, under the favorable silence of the Communist Party government, Azerbaijan is successfully developing a practical program to incorporate Armenia into West Azerbaijan. The Armenian government shows no opposition to the increasing demands of the Azerbaijani authorities on Armenia and continues to make successive concessions. In fact, news broke a few days ago that Armenia had ceded further border positions in the Tavush region to Azerbaijan. The Armenian government, without scruples, intends to demonstrate that eliminating the threat of war requires ceding more territory, avoiding any discussion of Armenia's rights, not mentioning the name of Artsakh, erasing history, and removing the symbols of glory and the images of heroic martyrs. These instructions are being given, in particular, to the directors of educational institutions and Armenian diplomatic representatives, while Azerbaijan is doing the exact opposite: taking concrete actions against Armenia accompanied by daily aggressive rhetoric.

If the Armenian government is not incapable of doing so, then it is making a mockery of the entire nation by talking about returning "illegally occupied" territories within the framework of the demarcation, while Azerbaijani soldiers remain peacefully in the territories occupied in Armenia in recent years and, instead of withdrawing, are further reinforcing their positions. Shouldn't their withdrawal from those territories be preceded by clarification regarding the remaining territories? And is there any guarantee that Azerbaijan, which has never announced any territorial or other concessions, is willing to cede anything after all the concessions made by Armenia?

Nikol Pashinyan “managed to convince” the Armenian people of the lie that he is radically changing relations with Russia because the Russians didn't help the Armenians during the Turkish-Azerbaijani aggression, and that he is redirecting Armenia precisely toward those who carried out that very aggression. Perhaps he thinks that if it has been possible to deceive with such ploys until now, why can't he do it again? It turns out that in the “brilliant” Turkish-Western alliance that begins with Armenia, Armenia is destined to play the role of executor and cederator, and its partners the role of claimant and recipient. However, it must be admitted that on one particular issue, the West is providing tangible and practical support to the Armenian government. We are talking about political patronage, which has been evident for years in the shameful activities of Armenia's authoritarian government, the latest glaring example of which was its blatant support in the elections.

The West seemed oblivious to the fact that, after those shameful elections, Pashinyan not only stole the votes of one of the parties that had entered parliament and prevented them from taking their seats, but also imprisoned its leader and nationalized his private companies without trial or justification. The West probably also failed to notice that, before that, the leader of another party participating in the pre-election contest had suffered the same fate, and this chain of events was subsequently completed with the arrest of the leader of the third opposition party, which had surpassed the electoral threshold in the parliamentary elections.

It is reasonable to assume that the West has its own logical reasons for taking these actions; For example, it is evident that, given the arrest and eviction of major Armenian businesspeople, Armenian business activity is shifting from Russia to the West, specifically Turkey and Azerbaijan. It is worth noting that, in this difficult situation, Nikol Pashinyan's persistent efforts to wrest control of the Armenian Railway from Russia and hand it over to the Turkish state continue unabated. Azerbaijan's increasing demands for the closure of the Armenian nuclear power plant, with the promise of supplying electricity to Armenia, are not coincidental. Here, of course, another convergence of interests is at play: on the eve of difficult times ahead for Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan is neutralizing his potential competitors.

By constantly talking about economic diversification lately, the Civil Contract government is leading Armenia toward greater dependence on the Turkish partnership, making political dependence inevitable. And we see that, openly and quietly, the new partners of the pro-Turkish government are pushing and forcing this shift by all means. Of course, at the same time, they are so devaluing the Armenian government that, while speaking of establishing a lasting peace with Armenia on various international platforms, they continue to increase the pressure on Armenia to make concessions.

September is for us the month of the declaration of independence of Armenia and Artsakh. Since the declaration of independence, Armenia has never been so dependent, so defeated and humiliated by external forces as it is now. If, under the leadership of the previous authorities, and at the cost of great sacrifices, it had managed to liberate territory and proclaim the Republic of Artsakh, this new authority, after suffering a shameful defeat, simply surrendered Artsakh. And at the same time, no authority has been so complacent, has not boasted so much about Armenia's unprecedented independent existence, nor has it accused its predecessors of subjecting Armenia to foreign influence.

Perhaps the authorities are counting on the people's short memory when they claim that, before its conquest, Artsakh was a noose around Armenia's neck, and Armenia was under Russian colonial subjugation. Perhaps it's worth mentioning that human insolence knows no bounds.

The entire policy of the Armenian authorities is based on lies and deceit. They probably calculate that by plunging the country into a climate of fear, arresting and neutralizing the opposition, and relying on external forces at the expense of Armenia's interests, they can ensure their continued hold on power. And perhaps they are right to think so? If the wave of opposition manifests itself only within parliament, there is no doubt that this force will reach the next elections and regain power. So far, the potential of the opposition in the country has not been enough to prevent them from committing with impunity the illegalities and recklessness that characterize their actions, in a context of external silence and support.

In the current situation, and perhaps in any case, the main task of a political force is to connect with the people and work with them. It's worth noting that Nikol Pashinyan understands this perfectly, and if he weren't the most popular leader in Armenia, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to ascend to the presidency or remain there for so long.

Let's recall that before the last parliamentary elections in Armenia, after having been in the public eye for eight years, he traveled the length and breadth of Armenia, often receiving a less than cordial reception in the streets and squares, and maintained close contact with the population.

It's also worth noting that the existence of the current parliament, which has become a puppet show, is very beneficial to him, as it not only establishes his supposed legitimacy but also allows him to present himself to the world as a representative of the "democracy" he has established, in a setting of constant clashes and verbal battles. To justify its positive presence in this parliamentary environment, the opposition must combine direct activity with daily contact with citizens and the various sectors of society. Something that, incidentally, the opposition had already declared before the new parliament began its work.

This activity demonstrates, above all, that the opposition's pre-election meetings were not only aimed at winning votes, but also at taking into account public opinion, harnessing its power, and expressing their everyday concerns in parliament.

Constant, parallel work with the people will strengthen the opposition, seizing the opportunity it provides to express itself beyond the walls of parliament, extending throughout the country and, ultimately, bringing the people's feelings and demands to the highest representative body. Moreover, this work must be carried out with all strata of society, especially since it is the duty of national forces to disabuse the masses who believed in Pashinyan's promises and threats and who were deceived by the direct and indirect propaganda of various external forces. It is clear that the attitude of the disoriented masses guarantees the possibility of the government's anti-Armenian policies, which are pushing Armenia to the brink. In turn, working with the citizenry means not only holding public meetings, but also maintaining an accessible, patient, and ongoing dialogue about the different social strata, their concerns, and their responsibilities.

On the other hand, rapid geopolitical developments are fraught with new realities and unpredictable situations. One thing is clear: without strength and preparation, one cannot emerge victorious in any new situation. Today, the prevailing realities also dictate the corresponding actions of national forces. In this case, one must either resist and submit to the passage of time, or time will leave one behind.
