The Supreme Council of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF-Dashnaktsutyun) issued a statement on August 23rd commemorating the 36th anniversary of Armenia's Declaration of Independence. The statement affirmed that the document constitutes the "birth certificate" of the Armenian state and warned that any attack against the Declaration is an attack on the very foundations of statehood.
"On August 23, 1990, under the most difficult circumstances, the Supreme Council of Armenia declared the beginning of the process of creating our independent state," the ARF recalled.
The organization noted that the Declaration of Independence was adopted unanimously, despite the political disagreements existing at the time, and with the participation of nearly all parliamentary and extra-parliamentary forces.
"It enshrined the political, historical, legal, economic, and cultural pillars for the restoration of the independence of the Armenian state," the statement asserted.
The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) recalled that, one year later, on September 21, 1991, the independence of the Republic of Armenia was ratified through a national referendum.
“The Declaration became the foundation of our state legislation and, as the basis of the future Constitution, found its rightful place in the Preamble to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, as a fundamental value of the newly independent state, which is not subject to change,” it stated.
The message was released amidst a political debate in Armenia regarding the intention of Nikol Pashinyan’s government to move forward with a new Constitution that makes no reference to the 1990 Declaration of Independence, under the pretext of ending the Artsakh movement and consolidating the so-called peace agenda with Azerbaijan.
“The Declaration of Independence is the pillar of our unity. It describes the nature of our state and our pan-Armenian commitment. It is our birth certificate, and any attack against it is an attack against the very foundations of our statehood,” the ARF stated.
The organization called for unwavering commitment to the idea of independence and the national ideals enshrined in the Declaration.
“By remaining true to the idea of independence and the national ideals enshrined therein, we must find the strength to reject anti-state and anti-national authorities, reaffirming our aspiration to live in freedom and our will to build an independent, sovereign, democratic, social, and legal state,” it stated.
According to the ARF, this position guarantees the viability of the Armenian state and a peaceful and secure future.
“By upholding the Declaration of Independence, we are defending the Republic of Armenia and the sovereignty of the Armenian state,” the Supreme Council of the Armenian ARF concluded.
