A tragic incident has occurred in Rome. A 22-year-old worker died while working on the Colosseum’s lighting system.
The incident occurred around midnight. The young man, who was attached to a rope, fell from a height of about ten meters. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli immediately arrived at the scene and spent the night in the Colosseum. On his orders, the monument was closed out of respect for the deceased worker, and all ongoing work in the amphitheater was suspended until further notice.
As stated in the statement of the Colosseum Park, the immediate closure of the entrances was avoided in order to avoid the accumulation of a large number of visitors and possible security problems.
The Rome prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni personally responded to the tragedy, expressing his condolences and sorrow to the victim’s family and loved ones. "We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death of Andrea Moretti, who died in an accident at the Colosseum last night," he said.
Meloni stressed that death at the age of 22, especially in the workplace, was unacceptable, and assured that authorities would continue to make efforts to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
