Brothers Saro and Harutyun Tunyan grew up in the village of Shrvakan, in the Lernahovit community of the Kashatagh region of the Republic of Artsakh. From childhood, they had a strong connection to their homeland and its natural surroundings. In 1999, their family moved from the village of Aghitu in Sisian to Shrvakan, beginning a new life in historic Kashatagh. The brothers grew up and received their education there, dreaming of developing their homeland. After graduating from school, both brothers were drafted into the Armenian Army. Saro served as a sniper in the Martuni-2 military unit, receiving the “Excellence”, “Brave Warrior” and “Best Soldier-Athlete” medals, as well as the rank of sergeant. One year later, Harutyun joined the same military unit. The 2020 war reunited the brothers on the front lines in defence of their homeland. Saro, who had already completed his military service, volunteered to return to the front during the first days of the war. He went with his cousin Narek to join his brother, who was already fighting. They fought in the directions of Aghdam, Fizuli and Jabrayil. On October 26, an explosion caused by an enemy grenade launcher shell took Saro’s life. Hunan, Manvel, Narek and another conscript soldier were also killed. On the same day, Harutyun was seriously wounded. Although the brothers fought on the same fronts, they never managed to meet on the battlefield. The war also claimed the life of another young man from Lernahovit, Karen Sahakyan. Born in 2001, Karen attended the secondary school named after Azniv and Misak Daderian alongside Saro. He had also participated in the school’s construction. Karen was drafted into the army in January 2020 and served in Martuni-2 with his brother Karlen. He was killed on November 8, before his brother’s eyes, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Courage of the Republic of Artsakh. Today, Shrvakan is deserted. The forests and valleys of Saro and Harutyun’s childhood, the Spitakajur Waterfall and the historical monuments they discovered remain in memories of a homeland they have lost. However, their story reflects the dedication with which the young people of Kashatagh grew up, served and gave their lives in defence of their homeland.
