A month ago, our two children, on the occasion of our wedding anniversary, had decided to take part in a tour with a large group to western Turkey (Anatolia) as a big vacation “gift” to us.

Կ’ըսեմ մտովի։

Although it was a surprise, it was also a proud and grateful event.

So, this year, our planned vacation to Armenia had been “scrapped”.

Տամատեան իր կարգին արդէն մեզ կը սպասէ Սկիւտարի գերեզմանատան մէջ, որմէ ետք՝ Ազգային «Ս.

But, because this planned tour, which would last ten or so days by large carriage, would start in Istanbul, passing through Trogir, Izmir, Konya, Cappadocia, Ankara, and would end in Istanbul, I asked one of the boys that the day before the tour, at least for a few more days, we, both men and women, would stay in Constantinople and walk around and enjoy it, especially getting to know its Armenian section.

Փրկիչ» հիւանդանոց, ապա անպայման՝ պատրիարքարան առաջնորդելու համար: Անկասկած…համեստ, պարզ եւ հաւատքով լի ուխտաւոր մըն էի…

I wanted to say… we would visit our Armenian editorial offices, the patriarchate, the Holy Savior Hospital, the national cemeteries, and finally whatever my memory dictated at that moment.

com Գէորգ Պետիկեան The post ՊՈԼՍԱՊԱՏՈՒՄՍ ՄԵՐ «ՊՈԼԻՍ»-Ը ԿԱՄ՝ ԱՇԽԱՐՀԻ «ԻՍԹԱՆՊՈՒԼ»-Ը appeared first on Գանձասար .

They agreed and quickly arranged what was suggested.

And now, standing at the door of a huge and beautiful inn in the Besiktas district, we, a man and a woman, are waiting for our “taxi,” which, first of all, will take us to the editorial office of the “Zhamanak” daily newspaper.

I said Istanbul, “forgive me.”

For us, this city is our old Istanbul.

“Istanbul” belongs to the world.

Its secular name is; ours is simply Istanbul… And we set off.

Passing through the narrow and wide streets, large and small shops, and streets of this city with more than twenty million inhabitants, we finally reached “Zhamanak.”

During the journey, although we were “busy” with curious eyes, men and women, looking out the car window at the avenues, the passers-by, and the various cats that scurried under their feet, sometimes as the car passed from street to street or from square to square, the names and directions of the region and nearby regions written on the giant green signboards hanging high would catch my eye.

Thus, as far as I could remember… “Beşiktaş”, “Kum Kapu”, “Eskisehir”, “Samatya”, “Skytadar”, “Galatia”, “Pera”, “Ortagüğü”, “Khasgüğü”, “Istanbul”, “İzmir” and even “Konia”… were the names.

In a word, for me, a kind of irregular passage of endless names that keep pace with our Armenian life, from the ends of which automatically hung the names of "Tekeyan", "Oshagan", "Turian", "Yesayan", "Shant", "Partevian", "Chopanian", "Zabel Asadour", and many, many more, who, with the inspiration of their thoughts and pens, brought our world to the threshold of safe development.

Without a doubt, in my mind, these and all the other names born in the Armenian province and the press created by them clearly revealed the vast Armenian horizon of experiences that opened behind them.

In other words, all of these were names that valued their lasting presence as domineering faces… names that had come and were firmly established in my mind as an inheritance, from my parents, my birthplace, my club, my elementary school, my Djemaran… Here, the “Istanbul” I knew, where the national wealth of our Western Armenian heritage was once stored.

And these days, hundreds of similar faces and events have already been kept under the capricious laughter of fate, and many, many more have been destroyed by the blows of fate.

Istanbul… I say it in my mind and I repeat it over and over… there was a time when you were the mine of Armenian life.

You were also the brilliant and beautiful realm of Western Armenians.

Without a doubt.

And the Armenian was here, under your oath, for centuries.

It had always been here and had taken deep root.

And today, as a simple and equally complex pilgrim, I had come to reconnect my soul and heart with these historical names.

I was happy that at this age I was still experiencing the sweetness of my memories.

I wanted to communicate with the past that all the names had inherited from me in an instant.

Honestly, on that narrow and long seat of the car, I could not determine the limits of the feeling that filled me, because I was living the frequency of visions.

And regardless of all this, if you try to walk the streets of Constantinople, you will definitely see or encounter those exceptional stone “manuscripts” of Armenian architects, which will inspire you with even greater pride.

Also, if you absolutely want to walk through the narrow and wide streets and neighborhoods of the city, and especially the birthplace of our national awakening, searching for all the beloved and respected names mentioned above, who had made history with their pens and who are no longer there by fate, your pilgrim's heart will definitely be filled with sadness.

On the other hand, it was clearly visible how this crowded "Istanbul" had become a city of contrasts, where the traditional and the modern lived side by side.

Strange, but true.

Personally, I had begun to spin the mystery of my experiences on my way.

I was very happy and excited about it.

Suddenly we were shocked.

The taxi had stopped.

It seemed that we had reached our rendezvous.

And what guilt can I hold, at the beginning of the journey, in conversation, I had explained to the driver in my broken Turkish that, “my merciful mother was born in Eskisehir,” and “my dear father, Kilista.”

Of course, my wife, having come to my aid, had made every word and phrase precise.

The man had replied with a broad smile, happy and satisfied, “Tamam, sen pizim hamsheri…” The man had thought we were Turks.

Whose heart?

Now was not the time for us to reveal ourselves more.

We got off the car and entered the building right in front of the “Saint Vartanants Armenian Church.”

There, we were greeted by Ara Gochunian, the editor of “Zhamanak,” with great joy and enthusiasm, a bright smile, and a sense of joy and longing.

We were immediately led to the office, where the principal, Nadia Kochunian, was already waiting for us, who was celebrating her 75th birthday and her journalistic career.

The 45th anniversary would be celebrated publicly and with dignity next week.

Mrs.

Nadia, with her creative mind, was an exemplary devotee of Armenian literature and especially the Armenian press for the community.

Here was a historic meeting for me and an equally memorable initiative.

After the usual words of welcome and longing, in the warm atmosphere of a cup of coffee, a close and friendly bond had already been created between us and the director-editor couple (mother and son), and we talked together for about two hours, side by side, and discussed issues affecting the region and Armenians, old and new, from the press to the community, schools and churches, expressing ourselves sincerely and openly.

We were happy.

Everyone.

Because, alongside mutual respect, we had also all encountered the feeling of kinship and closeness that had taken root in our eyes.

Then, one by one, we toured the editorial offices, many of which had their walls decorated with drawings by the famous Ara Guller, and the busts of the founders of the daily newspaper and the sacred kondaks they had received were lined up under the walls.

Then, the room was also adorned with a cabinet reminiscent of a small historical “museum”.

It should be remembered that “time”, as an authentic presence, has become an inseparable part of Istanbul-Armenian life for more than a century, and has already left a clear echo in the minds of Armenian readers not only in Istanbul, but also throughout the Diaspora.

With its daily presence, it has mixed its breath with the breath of the life of the community, along with the love it has for the Armenian language, literature, and culture.

On the other hand, undoubtedly, Istanbul is always proud of itself.

Moreover…it is remarkable how, alongside the difficulties of everyday troubles, there is still an Armenian community within the community that knows how to stand on its own feet.

It knows how to survive.

It has a sacred patriarch and a centuries-old patriarchate.

It has schools and churches.

It also has choirs and theater groups, which it knows how to keep alive and prosperous with contagious emotions.

For this reason, I have deep respect and love for these same Armenians.

Because in the hearts of all of them, I saw Armenian life, Armenian tradition, respect and Armenianness, which give a sweet echo to the mind of the observer and listener.

It is very clear that the internal and external issues and troubles of the Diaspora remained outside of Constantinople and have remained for a long time.

Especially the noise.

A benevolent assessment…if you want.

Each person can interpret it differently.

The path of the pilgrim is not easy.

I say it mentally.

I will also honestly say that I am generally opposed to always seeing the advantages.

Before the black, the white, the hope and the light, the awareness of people living, with the loyalty that believes in the language and the nation.

For this, I looked and look at everyone around me with admiration, always keeping in my mind their spiritual longing, with the righteous desire to remain Armenian and survive with Armenian culture.

Because, I met people, Armenian people, who greeted the flowers of Armenianness every morning, and who at the same time sowed seeds in the field of Armenian literature with faith and hope.

And believe me, with such qualifications, good marks and assessments, I spontaneously felt myself placed in a new and different life.

I was happy and equally proud.

This is how this so-called “reality” had thrown me to who knows where.

Was I a tourist or a pilgrim?

Suddenly I feel that time has slipped by, and Rev.

Harutyun Damadian is already waiting for us in his turn at the Scythian cemetery, after which, to lead us to the National “St.

Prkich” Hospital, and then, of course, to the Patriarchate.

Without a doubt… I was a humble, simple and faith-filled pilgrim…
