This is a notebook that respects all the rules of a book.

»եան կողմէ, 1928 թուականին: Այս ընկերակցութիւնը նոյն անունով հիմնուեր է 1928-ին Գահիրէի մէջ, ապա, երբ կեդրոնը Պէյրութ (Լիբանան) կը փոխադրուի, անունը կը փոխուի եւ կը դառնայ «Համազգային Հայ Կրթական եւ Մշակութային Ընկերակցութիւն»-ի: Երբ հասայ Համաստեղի «Երբ այն Օրերուն Երեխայ էիր» քերթուածին, յիշեցի, որ մայրս ալ նման տետր մը ունէր, հազիւ 60-70 էջանի, ճերմակ, փայլուն թուղթով կողքուած, եւ ուր տեղ գտեր էր նաեւ Համաստեղի այս քերթուածը

It is bound, it has a gilded inscription on the spine: “Collection of Selected Excerpts” and a name: Daniel Kachoyan.

The title page was prepared with special attention: the name of the compiler, the title, the date, the place and, of course, the drawing of the pyramids.

The compiler also placed his photograph there, in a round frame.

The different shapes of the writings and the drawing of the pyramids also reveal a gift of art.

The smiling boy looking out from the photo appears to be 16-17 years old.

Դանիէլ Կաճօեան, նաեւ երկու այլ բառեր, որոնք կարեւորութիւն կը ստա-նան, որովհետեւ ամբողջ կեանք մը կը խտացնեն.

Judging by the title page he made and the 621 handwritten pages of the notebook, he must have had a great love for Armenian writing and literature.

«Յիշատակ է Սիրա»: Չենք գիտեր թէ ո՞վ է Յակոբ Կոնոեան.

“Started on Sunday, October 7, 1928,” is written in pencil on the inside.

բայց լաւ գիտենք Սիրա յունական կղզին, Եգէական ծովուն մէջ, ուր Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի Նպաստամատոյցի Ուիտրօ Ուիլսընի անունը կրող որբանոցը հիմնուած էր – ամէնէն մեծը Միջերկրական ծովուն շուրջ, ուր հայ եւ յոյն որբեր պատսպարուեր էին 1923-1930-ի շրջանին: 1928-ին, երբ որոշուեր էր ա՛լ փակել Սիրայի որբանոցը, յոյն որբերը ղրկուեր են իրենց ազգական-բարեկամ-ծանօթներուն, իսկ հոն ապաստան գտած հայ որբերը ղրկուեր են Եգիպտոս, նկատի առնելով որ Եգիպտոսի մէջ արդէն կազմակերպեալ հայ գաղութ մը կար, որ կրնար հոգալ այդ որբերը: Ուրեմն կրնանք ենթադրել, թէ Դանիէլ Կաճօեան Սիրայի որբերէն եղած է ու յետոյ ղրկուեր է Գահիրէ, հաւանաբար Boys՛ Home, ապա շարունակեր է ապրիլ, աշխատիլ եւ իր կեանքը հիմնել հոս, Գահիրէի մէջ: Այլ շատ փոքր, նամակի պահարանէ մը առնուած կտրօնի մը վրայ Շահէն ստորագրութեամբ կը կարդանք հետեւեալ քառատողը, գրուած 8-1-76-ին, որ կը թուի բնութագրել զինք՝ Դանիէլ Կաճօեանը.

Many of the portraits of the authors pasted in the notebook are coupons taken from newspapers, while others are in the form of stamps, published by the “National Educational and Publishing Association” in 1928.

«Ամէն ցաւի դեղ ու դարման ես, Դանիէ՛լ, Ամէն հոգու հովահար ես, Դանիէ՛լ, Դժբախտներուն յենարան ես, Դանիէ՛լ, Չարերու դէմ դուն հպարտ ես, Դանիէլ»: Յստակ չէ, թէ ո՞վ է Շահէնը.

This association was founded with the same name in Cairo in 1928, then, when the center was moved to Beirut (Lebanon), the name was changed and became the “National Armenian Educational and Cultural Association”.

When I came to the Hamastegh’s “When You Were a Child in Those Days” notebook, I remembered that my mother also had a similar notebook, barely 60-70 pages, with white, glossy paper on the sides, and where she had also found this Hamastegh notebook (what I would give to have that notebook of my mother’s now in my hands.

Why, however, did teenagers in those years, in different cities/countries (my mother in Aleppo, Daniel in Cairo, and others in other places), compile such notebooks, probably copying from newspapers and magazines?

Կաճօեանի ստորագրութիւնը եւ որոնցմէ առաջինը՝ «Լապտերիս», գրուած է 1929 թուականին: Հերթով կը ներկայացնենք «Կեանք եւ Գիր»-ին մէջ լոյս տեսած իր քերթուածները.

Perhaps those newspapers and magazines were not theirs, because in those days newspapers and magazines were also passed on to each other, for the sake of economy, like books.

And in the case of those copied from textbooks, as Kajoyan notes under the writings as a source, instead of searching for a passage or a writing, it could be found immediately, copied from the notebook.

He was born in Turkey, we do not know where.

From the records of his death in the archives of the Cairo Prelacy, we learn that he died in 1984, when he was 74 years old.

It turns out that he was born in 1910, that is, a child barely 5 years old during the days of the Massacre and deportation.

But we know well the Greek island of Syracuse, in the Aegean Sea, where the orphanage named after the Near East Relief Organization Withrow Wilson was founded – the largest around the Mediterranean Sea, where Armenian and Greek orphans were sheltered between 1923 and 1930.

In 1928, when it was decided to close the Syracuse orphanage, the Greek orphans were sent to their relatives, friends and acquaintances, and the Armenian orphans who found refuge there were sent to Egypt, considering that there was already an organized Armenian community in Egypt that could take care of those orphans.

So we can assume that Daniel Kachoyan was an orphan in Syria and was later sent to Cairo, probably to the Boys' Home, and then continued to live, work, and establish his life here, in Cairo.

On a very small, handwritten note taken from a letterbox, we read the following quatrain, written on 8-1-76, which seems to describe him, Daniel Kachoyan: “You are the medicine and cure for every pain, Daniel, You are the windbreaker for every soul, Daniel, You are the support of the unfortunate, Daniel, You are proud against evil, Daniel.”

It is not clear who Shahen is.

Perhaps those who knew Daniel Kachoyan would be able to confirm what was said about him.

But this notebook more than confirms D.

Kachoyan's love for Armenian writing and literature, which was also expressed in his work.

In the truly Egyptian-Armenian "Life and Writing" (1944-1950, Cairo, publisher: David Shahlamian) we find a dozen excerpts that bear D.

Kachoyan's signature, the first of which, "Lampteris", was written in 1929.
