Simon Abkarian - De Gaulle : “ Il faut toujours résister ”

Presented out of competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Antonin Baudry's *The Battle of de Gaulle: The Iron Age* is an adaptation of historian Julian Jackson's book *De Gaulle: A Certain Idea of France*. Baudry presents a diptych: *The Iron Age* (in theaters June 3, 2026) and *I Write Your Name* (released June 26). A total budget estimated at approximately €75 million (co-produced by Jérôme Seydoux and Ardavan Safae, president of Pathé Films) is dedicated to this epic work, imbued with realism and a spirit of freedom, while revealing little-known historical facts. Through his portrayal of Charles de Gaulle, Simon Abkarian explores the memory of nations, the weight of history, and the necessity of resistance. A compelling interview, blending personal narrative and political reflection.

Following the defeat of the French army in 1940, General de Gaulle went to London to organize external resistance to the Nazi German occupation of France. His isolation and the obstacles he encountered illustrate the adversity he would have to face to convince the British and then the Americans of the validity of his vision of a free France. The man of the June 18th Appeal, often described as a Don Quixote or an idealist, urged unity but failed to rally anyone. Meanwhile, young Parisians, stunned by the impotence of the Vichy government, dreamed of acts of rebellion. The two hours and forty minutes of this highly anticipated historical epic captivated viewers without a moment's respite.

It was there that I learned to listen to the stories, to hear the eloquence of the Armenian struggle, but also that solitude.

And that inevitably influences my

But it's not just my Armenian heritage.

I also have a French education.

J’ai aussi une éducation française.

French is the language in which I express myself best.

All of that blends together within me.

Tout cela se mélange en moi.

For me, De Gaulle isn't a foreigner.

In Armenian, you'd say he's "harazade": someone

Whether we practice it or not, it's part of us.

And that's something I recognized in De Gaulle: immense faith, inner strength.

When the Germans invaded France, he found himself almost alone in saying no.

I understand that

Cette voix-là, je la comprends.

He chose me because he'd seen me in other films.

Of course, physical appearance also matters.

Après, évidemment, le physique compte aussi.

If I were only

But I think above all, Antonin likes heroic figures.

Moi aussi.

Me too.

Et De Gaulle incarne cela.

And De Gaulle embodies

My job is to invent a physicality, a presence, an artistic and poetic representation of this man at that moment.

Of course, I looked at archival footage, but I quickly moved beyond that.

À un moment, il faut imaginer.

At some point, you have to

He belongs to the French collective unconscious, to its pantheon.

But before that, he was a living man.

When interpreting a historical figure, you have to leave reality behind a little to offer something imagined, but which remains faithful to the spirit of the

The uniform, the silhouette, the makeup are essential.

They are necessary tools for the performance.

Tout cela doit être intériorisé.

All of this must be internalized.

What really matters is her courage, her eloquence, and above all, her absolute refusal to give

In my family culture and my Armenian culture, the honor of the fighter, the hero, is ever-present.

The songs I learned as a child speak only of this.

We grow up with this idea that we must remain dignified, like men.

Parfois c’est lourd à porter.

Sometimes it's a heavy burden to bear.

I want to tell stories, but my inner demons won't leave me alone.
