Did You Know: When Baku's oil was also Armenian

The history of Baku's oil industry dates back to the mid-19th century. The discovery of oil attracted a large number of Armenians, including two emblematic figures with Russified names: Ivan Mirzoev, who drilled the first oil well in 1871, and Alexander Mantashev, an industrialist, oil magnate, and philanthropist.

Knowledge of oil deposits dates back to the 7th century when the Armenian geographer and philosopher, Ananias of Shirak, mentioned them in his Armenian Geography, and later by Marco Polo (1254-1324), when he alluded to the oil of Greater Armenia: “In the north, there is a great spring from which flows a liquid similar to oil; it is worthless for eating, but good for burning and for all other uses; which is why neighboring nations come to stock up on it, even loading many ships, without the spring, which flows continuously, appearing to be diminished in any way” (1). The place he refers to is the Apsheron Peninsula (2), located on the western coast of the Caspian Sea (now in Azerbaijan). Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (1869-1955) (3), whom his father sent to Baku to make initial contact with the oil industry, wrote in 1891 in *Transcaucasia and the Apcheron Peninsula* that “oil is abundant in Transcaucasia. The conditions under which this industry operates in Baku are unknown. We will try to fill this gap, or rather, to gather the information we ourselves have collected during our journey. We would like to inspire some French engineers to finally go to the land of oil; they would study it, they would find ways to utilize all the substances currently dumped into the sea and sold elsewhere for their weight in gold. On that day, the rivalry between Baku oil and American oil in the European markets would be nothing but a memory.”
