Mass brawl in the Armenian parliament: footage from the incident

On October 6, at a session of the National Assembly of Armenia, a debate broke out between deputies from the ruling “Civil Contract” faction and the opposition “Strong Armenia” faction, which escalated into a fight.

The point is that the agenda of today’s session of the National Assembly includes the draft “On Determining the Number of Members of the Investigative Commission Investigating the Crisis That Has Arose in the Armenian Apostolic Church as a Result of the Activities of a Number of Clergy, as well as the Problems Caused by This Failure to Fulfill the Exclusive Mission of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the Spiritual Life of the Armenian People, the Development of National Culture, and the Preservation of National Identity,” which the opposition considers unconstitutional.

At one point in the National Assembly, the situation became tense. Edgar Ghazaryan from the “Strong Armenia” faction, in particular, stated in his speech that Ruben Rubinyan had squandered state funds and urged the deputies not to spend the 250,000 drams they received as a bonus. In the middle of the speech, Ruben Rubinyan turned off Edgar Ghazaryan's microphone, noting that he was not speaking on the agenda. Then the situation in the hall became heated, opposition and government deputies began to push and pull each other, a fight broke out.

Ruben Rubinyan declared a recess and invited the security guards into the hall. The Speaker of the National Assembly Ruben Rubinyan and the Deputy Speaker Aram Vardevanyan also came down to the scene of the fight. It was impossible to calm the parties for a long time. Law enforcement officers began to forcibly remove the deputies from the hall.
