Quarantine declared in Russia after suspected plague; authorities do not confirm infection

After Shipilova's death, the inpatient department of the Shelekhov hospital was closed, and quarantine was declared in at least three hospitals in Irkutsk. According to Russian media, as of October 4, 197 people who had or may have had contact with the deceased woman were isolated and hospitalized in the Irkutsk region.

Plague is a zoonotic infectious disease with a natural focus, a severe course. The main natural reservoir of the infection is rodents, and the main transmitters are infected fleas.

During cutaneous plague, the skin and surrounding tissues are affected at the site of penetration of the pathogen. In the septic form, the pathogen spreads through the blood, causing damage to the entire body (sepsis). And in the meningeal form of plague, the membranes of the brain are affected. According to the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, the World Health Organization currently does not recommend vaccination against plague as a routine vaccination of the population.
