Lebanon, Artsakh and the Middle East: Topics for Discussion between Catholicos Aram I and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Parolin

His Holiness first of all addressed the situation in Lebanon and appreciated the consistent work of the government led by the President of Lebanon and the Prime Minister. Then, referring to southern Lebanon, he said that Israel should withdraw its military forces from southern Lebanon, the country's army should assume overall security, and the Lebanese state should re-establish its sovereignty in all regions. His Holiness also stressed the imperative of strengthening internal unity among all communities in Lebanon and warmly welcomed the Vatican’s support for Lebanon.

His Holiness then addressed the challenges facing Christian communities in the Middle East, emphasizing the imperative of halting the exodus of Christians and the role of the region’s churches in this regard.

Ապա, վեհափառ հայրապետը անդրադարձաւ Միջին Արեւելքի մէջ քրիստոնեայ համայնքներուն դիմագրաւած մարտահրաւէրներուն` շեշտելով քրիստոնեաներու արտագաղթը կասեցնելու հրամայականը եւ այս գծով շրջանի եկեղեցիներուն դերը:

Catholicos Aram I highly appreciated the Vatican’s continued support for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the re-establishment of the rights of the Armenian people. Speaking about Artsakh, His Holiness said that the return of the people of Artsakh and the re-establishment of their rights, the protection of churches and historical monuments, and the speedy release of the leaders of Artsakh detained in Baku are imperative for our church and people. In this regard, His Holiness appealed for the support of the Vatican.

Արամ Ա. կաթողիկոս բարձր գնահատեց Հայոց ցեղասպանութեան ճանաչման եւ հայ ժողովուրդի իրաւունքներու վերահաստատման գծով Վատիկանի ցուցաբերած շարունակական նեցուկը: Խօսելով Արցախի մասին` վեհափառ հայրապետը ըսաւ, որ Արցախի ժողովուրդին վերադարձը եւ անոր իրաւունքներուն վերահաստատումը, եկեղեցիներու ու պատմական կոթողներու պաշտպանութիւնը եւ Պաքուի մէջ կալանաւորուած Արցախի ղեկավարներու շուտափոյթ ազատ արձակումը մեր եկեղեցւոյ ու ժողովուրդին համար հրամայական են: Այս ուղղութեամբ վեհափառ հայրապետը կոչ ուղղեց Վատիկանի աջակցութեան:

Cardinal Paroli, in turn, speaking about the difficulties faced by Lebanon, provided necessary information about the work of the Vatican in Israel and the United States. He also provided some clarifications on the initiatives taken by the Vatican in Artsakh in general and the release of prisoners in particular. Cardinal Paroli welcomed the proposal made by His Holiness Aram I to organize special consultative meetings in the Vatican for the Christian spiritual leaders of Lebanon, as well as the Christian spiritual leaders of the Middle East.

At the end of the meeting, His Holiness the Patriarch presented Cardinal Parolin with a souvenir representing the Mother of God, as well as a two-volume publication containing images of the Armenian churches of Artsakh. Cardinal Parolin, in turn, presented His Holiness with a souvenir.

At the end of the meeting, which lasted about an hour, His Holiness the Patriarch had the opportunity to have a private conversation with the Cardinal on some sensitive issues.

The Department for Inter-Church Relations is one of the most important structures of the Vatican, which not only cultivates relations with all the churches and inter-church councils of the world, but also initiates theological dialogues. Aram I. His Holiness the Pope has been in constant contact with the heads of the aforementioned department for decades and is closely acquainted with the work carried out by them.

The meeting between His Holiness the Pope and Cardinal Kurt Koch, head of the Vatican’s Inter-Church Department, lasted more than an hour. First, His Holiness the Pope and the Cardinal had a private meeting, during which the latter wanted to know His Holiness’s point of view on some sensitive issues. Then, a meeting lasting more than an hour was held, which was attended by members of His Holiness’ delegation and the staff of the Vatican’s Inter-Church Department.

Cardinal Koch, taking a speech, welcomed His Holiness the Pope’s arrival in the Vatican, recalling the numerous meetings His Holiness had with former popes and inter-church leaders. He highlighted the important role and rich experience of His Holiness the Patriarch in the inter-church sphere, as well as the close cooperation with the Vatican.

Catholicos Aram I, taking his speech, said that the Armenian Church in general and the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia in particular have attached special importance to the inter-church movement, starting from ancient centuries. Today, our Holy See is an active presence in the World Council of Churches, regional councils and other ecumenical structures, as well as a participant in theological dialogues. After this reminder, His Holiness the Patriarch, referring to the current situation revealed by the inter-church movement, noted that the ecumenical movement in general is in crisis. The crises facing the world have also affected the inter-church movement in various ways. Churches have begun to prioritize cooperation between churches across denominations.

Արամ Ա. կաթողիկոսը խօսք առնելով ըսաւ, որ Հայ եկեղեցին ընդհանրապէս եւ Մեծի Տանն Կիլիկիոյ կաթողիկոսութիւնը մասնաւորաբար յատուկ կարեւորութիւն տուած են միջեկեղեցական շարժումին, հին դարերէն սկսեալ: Այսօր, մեր Սուրբ աթոռը գործօն ներկայութիւն է Եկեղեցիներու համաշխարհային խորհուրդին, շրջանային խորհուրդներուն եւ այլ էքիւմենիք կառոյցներուն մէջ, ինչպէս նաեւ մասնակից է աստուածաբանական երկխօսութիւններու: Այս յիշեցումէն ետք, վեհափառ հայրապետը անդրադառնալով միջեկեղեցական շարժումին պարզած ներկայ կացութեան` նշեց, որ ընդհանրապէս էքիւմենիք շարժումը տագնապի մէջ է: Աշխարհի դիմագրաւած տագնապները զանազան ձեւերով նաեւ ազդած են միջեկեղեցական շարժումին վրայ: Եկեղեցիները առաջնահերթութիւն սկսած են տալ դաւանակից եկեղեցիներու միջեւ գործակցութեան:

After this general overview, His Holiness the Patriarch emphasized the need to develop a new inter-church mindset, approach, and emphasis that is in line with the conditions of the present world and the expectations of Christian peoples. Today, doctrinal and theological issues inherited from the past are not as urgent for the churches as ethical issues that have become an existential presence in the life of the churches. Therefore, these issues should be given priority in inter-church cooperation, said His Holiness the Patriarch, while also addressing some issues related to the theological dialogue that exists between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches.

Այս ընդհանուր ակնարկէն ետք, վեհափառ հայրապետը ընդգծեց, որ անհրաժեշտ է ձեւաւորել միջեկեղեցական նոր մտածողութիւն, մօտեցում ու շեշտաւորում, որոնք ըլլան համապատասխան ներկայ աշխարհի պայմաններուն եւ քրիստոնեայ ժողովուրդներու ակնկալութիւններուն: Այսօր, անցեալէն ժառանգուած դաւանաբանական ու աստուածաբանական հարցերը այնքան հրատապ չեն եկեղեցիներուն համար, որքան բարոյագիտական հարցերը, որոնք դարձած են գոյութենական ներկայութիւն եկեղեցիներու կեանքին մէջ: Հետեւաբար, այս հարցերը պէտք է առաջնահերթութիւն ստանան միջեկեղեցական գործակցութեան մէջ, ըսաւ վեհափառ հայրապետը, միաժամանակ անդրադառնալով Կաթողիկէ եկեղեցւոյ եւ Արեւելեան ուղղափառ եկեղեցիներու միջեւ գոյութիւն ունեցող աստուածաբանական երկխօսութեան առնչուած կարգ մը խնդիրներու:

At the end of the meeting, His Holiness Aram I presented Cardinal Koch with a souvenir representing the Mother of God.

It should be noted that that same evening, in honor of His Holiness, Cardinal Koch hosted a dinner, at which, alongside the members of His Holiness’s delegation, high-ranking officials of the Vatican’s Inter-Church Department were present. Speaking again during the dinner, the Cardinal reflected on the important role played by His Holiness and the highly appreciated contribution he made to the further development of the inter-church movement.
