Houshamadyan in Thessaloniki

Το Houshamadyan στη Θεσσαλονίκη

On the evening of Friday, November 12, 2021, the Houshamadyan research project introduction event was held at the Armenian Church of the Virgin Mary (Sourp Astvatsatsin).

The coordinator and curator, historian Vahe Tastjian, presented Houshamadyan’s work to the community members. The speech was accompanied by a projection of images and videos. Over the next two days, Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14, workshops were held in the archives room next to the church building, where a total of 15 families came, bringing with them old photographs, objects and documents.

The oral testimonies of the participants about their ancestors were written down and recorded using multimedia.

The stories were diverse, each a unique experience, like small and large pieces of a puzzle that come together to cover different aspects of Armenian history, from their ancestral homeland to their exile. The stories in question came from many different regions of the vast Ottoman Empire, such as Sebastia, Radesto, Chorlu, Bursa, Adapazari, Kessab, Afyonkarahisar, Talas (Mutalaski), Tokat, Malgara, Constantinople, Ankara, Kayseri, Keremek, Izmir, Adrianople, Tsimishchik, etc.

The event and workshops were held in collaboration with Houshamadyan, the magazine “Armenika” and the branch of the Cultural Association “Hamaskain” of Thessaloniki.

The sponsor of the Thessaloniki workshop was the German foundation EVZ (Memory, Responsibility, Future).
