The "Mankurtization" Technique: How the Pashinyan Regime is Erasing the Historical Memory of the Armenian People

The ruling elite's attack on Armenian identity is systemic. The church is under blatant pressure, school textbooks are being rewritten, and traditional values are publicly ridiculed by pro-government spokespeople. Armen Ovasapyan further elaborates on this idea in his post. The expert emphasizes that behind these political decisions lies a much deeper trend, affecting the very attitude toward Armenian self-awareness.

Идет неприкрытое давление на церковь, переписываются школьные учебники, а традиционные ценности подвергаются публичному осмеянию провластными спикерами. Эту мысль в своей публикации развивает и Армен Овасапян. Эксперт подчеркивает, что за политическими решениями кроется куда более глубокая тенденция, затрагивающая само отношение к армянскому самосознанию.

"The illegitimate government consistently attempts to tear people away from everything that shaped their national identity: history, historical memory, heroes, the church, national symbols, traditional notions of the homeland... The destruction of identity has become part of political thinking, almost a cult," states the RPA Council member.

«Нелегитимная власть последовательно пытается оторвать человека от всего, что сформировало его национальную идентичность: от истории, исторической памяти, героев, церкви, национальных символов, традиционных представлений о Родине… Разрушение идентичности стало частью политического мышления, почти что культом», — констатирует член Совета РПА.

One of the main tools of Nikol Pashinyan's team in this ideological war has become the discrediting of historical figures. The authorities deliberately ignore the complexity of the geopolitical processes of the past, attempting to judge figures of bygone eras according to the primitive templates of the present.

Одним из главных инструментов команды Никола Пашиняна в этой идеологической войне стала дискредитация исторических деятелей. Власти намеренно игнорируют сложность геополитических процессов прошлого, пытаясь судить деятелей минувших эпох по примитивным лекалам современности.

Armen Ovasapyan explains how exactly this manipulation works. According to him, the mechanism for implementing this policy is extremely simple and at the same time incredibly cynical.

Армен Овасапян объясняет, как именно работает эта технология манипуляции. По его словам, механизм реализации данной политики предельно прост и в то же время невероятно циничен.

"They take a certain stage in a figure's biography, where they had some kind of contact with a foreign state, empire, or royal court, artificially remove this episode from the overall historical context, and on this basis, their entire career is called into question," the opposition politician notes.

«Берется определенный этап биографии деятеля, на котором он так или иначе соприкасался с иностранным государством, империей или монаршим двором, этот эпизод искусственно вырывается из общего исторического контекста и на основании этого под сомнение ставится вся его деятельность», — отмечает оппозиционный политик.

As the RPA representative explains, the country's leadership is imposing a distorted logic on society. They are trying to convince people that if any Armenian leader or historical figure served at a foreign court, enjoyed the support of, or collaborated with, external forces, then their entire career is simply a history of subservience to outsiders and "serving the interests of the empire."

Как поясняет представитель РПА, руководство страны навязывает обществу искаженную логику. Людям пытаются внушить, что если какой-либо армянский лидер или историческая личность служили при чужом дворе, пользовались поддержкой внешних сил или сотрудничали с ними, то вся их деятельность — это лишь история прислуживания чужакам и «обслуживание интересов империи».

However, the expert points out, the Armenian people have lived for centuries at the intersection of great empires. In the absence of an ideal balance of power, Armenian political and military leaders were forced to integrate into foreign systems, serve in foreign armies, and masterfully navigate the contradictions between powers in order to preserve the nation.

Однако, напоминает эксперт, армянский народ веками жил на стыке великих империй. В условиях отсутствия идеального баланса сил армянские политические и военные деятели были вынуждены интегрироваться в чужие системы, служить в иностранных армиях и виртуозно лавировать на противоречиях между державами, чтобы сохранить нацию.

Armen Ovasapyan cites well-known historical facts as evidence of the inconsistency of pro-government propaganda. One such example is Artashes I, the King of Greater Armenia.

В качестве доказательства несостоятельности провластной пропаганды Армен Овасапян приводит общеизвестные исторические факты. Таким примером служит царь Великой Армении Арташес I.

Initially, this outstanding figure held a high position in the Seleucid Empire and played a significant role there. However, after the fateful Battle of Magnesia, which dramatically shifted the balance of power in the region, Artashes I managed to find his bearings. He broke free from Seleucid influence and established an independent Armenian kingdom.

Изначально этот выдающийся деятель занимал высокую должность в системе государства Селевкидов и играл там значительную роль. Однако, после судьбоносной битвы при Магнезии, повлекшей резкое изменение баланса сил в регионе, Арташес I сумел безошибочно сориентироваться. Он вышел из-под влияния Селевкидов и создал независимое армянское царство.

"If we try to judge him solely by his past service, we'll end up with 'a man who served a foreign power.' But if we look at his entire political career, we see a figure who masterfully exploited geopolitical shifts to restore and expand Armenian statehood," Ovasapyan emphasizes.

«Если мы попытаемся оценивать его исключительно по факту прошлой службы, то получим “человека, служившего чужой державе”. Но если взглянуть на весь его политический путь, перед нами предстает деятель, который сумел ювелирно использовать геополитические перестановки для восстановления и расширения армянской государственности», — подчеркивает Овасапян.

A similar situation, according to the politician, can be traced in the history of the noble Armenian Zakaryan family. The outstanding military leaders Zakare and Ivane Zakaryan held high positions at the Georgian royal court. But judging their activities solely by this fact is to distort history. In fact, they used the military might of the Georgian state to liberate vast territories of Armenia, forming an Armenian princely system. It was this system that became the most important pillar of political upsurge in medieval Armenia.

Аналогичная ситуация, по словам политика, прослеживается и в истории знатного армянского рода Закарянов. Выдающиеся военачальники Закарэ и Иванэ Закарян занимали высокие посты при грузинском монаршем дворе. Но оценивать их деятельность только по этому факту — значит искажать историю. Фактически они использовали военную мощь грузинского государства для освобождения огромных территорий Армении, сформировав армянскую княжескую систему. Именно эта система стала важнейшей опорой политического подъема в средневековой Армении.

The ultimate goal of the current government is to create a weak, easily manipulated society, devoid of an inner core. If, generation after generation, the people are told that their ancestors were foreign agents, and all national liberation movements were merely banal attempts to establish themselves within yet another empire, society will begin to doubt all the key figures in its history. RPA Council member Armen Ovasapyan calls this process classic mankurtization.

Конечная цель действующего правительства — создать слабое, легко управляемое общество, лишенное внутреннего стержня. Если из поколения в поколение твердить народу, что его предки были чужими агентами, а все национально-освободительные движения — лишь банальными попытками устроиться внутри очередной империи, общество начнет сомневаться во всех ключевых фигурах своей истории. Именно этот процесс член Совета РПА Армен Овасапян называет классической манкуртизацией.

"It's not necessary to force people to forget their history; it's enough to simply convince them that there's nothing to be proud of in that history." "It's enough to foist dubious images on them in place of true heroes, to offer "adapted" explanations in place of great victories, and to reduce the national liberation struggle to a banal chronicle of relations with external forces. People will still remember names, dates, and events, but they will no longer understand why they should be proud of them," the politician concludes.

«Человека вовсе не обязательно заставлять забывать свою историю, достаточно просто внушить ему, что в этой истории нечем гордиться. Достаточно подсунуть ему сомнительные образы вместо настоящих героев, дать “адаптированные” объяснения вместо великих побед, а национально-освободительную борьбу свести к банальной хронике отношений с внешними силами. Человек все еще будет помнить имена, даты и события, но он перестанет понимать, почему должен ими гордиться», — резюмирует политик.

According to Ovasapyan, what is happening in Armenia today is not simply a loss of historical memory, but an artificially induced loss of trust in it. National identity is based on a person's inner conviction that the struggles of past generations were valuable, and their achievements are an inalienable legacy.

По оценке Овасапяна, происходящее сегодня в Армении — это не просто потеря исторической памяти, а искусственно спровоцированная утрата доверия к ней. Национальная идентичность базируется на внутренней убежденности человека в том, что борьба прошлых поколений имела ценность, а их достижения являются неотъемлемым наследием.

When the government deliberately sever this connection, citizens are left alone with the present. Deprived of a sense of historical responsibility and connection to their ancestors, society becomes defenseless. As the expert rightly notes, it is precisely on such a lost society that the current authorities can easily impose any new political formula, even the most absurd.

Когда правительство целенаправленно обрывает эту связь, гражданин остается один на один с настоящим. Лишившись чувства исторической ответственности и связи с предками, общество становится беззащитным. Как справедливо отмечает эксперт, именно такому потерянному обществу нынешние власти могут с легкостью навязать любую, даже самую абсурдную новую политическую формулу.
