…AND THEY DROVE THE FASCIST CROSS
Today, May 9, the world community celebrates the 70th anniversary of the victory over fascist Germany.
For the hoisting of the victorious banner over the Reichstag in Berlin, humanity paid a heavy price: more than six dozen million lives were laid on the altar of victory, and the most severe test fell on the Soviet people, whose share was more than 26 million human lives.

The Georgian and Armenian peoples made a significant contribution to the fight against the fascist plague along with other nations. It is noteworthy that during their centuries-old history, these two ancient nations had never brought such a large number of soldiers to the battlefield. Suffice it to say that every fifth inhabitant of the country from Georgia, about 700 thousand people - Georgians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Russians, Abkhazians, Ossetians, Kurds, Greeks ..., participated in the war, and from Armenia - 22 percent of the population, about 300 thousand people. During the war, Georgian and Armenian divisions were formed, which, starting their combat path from the Caucasus foothills, reached Berlin, Prague, Vienna... Unfortunately, a significant part of the soldiers drafted from both Georgia and Armenia did not return from the battlefield. In this regard, if the starting point for the calculation is the population and the number of victims, then the losses of the Armenian and Georgian peoples are incomparable with the losses suffered by other peoples participating in the war. At first glance, being in a territory free from hostilities, both Georgia and Armenia made a great contribution to the forging of victory. 137 servicemen from Georgia were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 240,000 were awarded orders and medals, more than 46,000 workers were awarded the medals "For the Defense of the Caucasus" and more than 333,000 - "For Labor Courage during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945". As for the participation of Armenians in the war, in general, about 550 thousand people participated from Armenia, of which 300 thousand were from Armenia. 103 Armenians were awarded the title of Hero, 27 became full knights of the Order of Glory, and about 70,000 Armenian servicemen were awarded medals and decorations. 21 thousand Armenians from the United States participated in the war, 30 thousand from France and Great Britain (including their colonies). The “David of Sasun” and “General Baghramyan” tank columns were created with the donations of Diaspora Armenians. Armenian and Georgian generals also distinguished themselves with their high military skills on the battlefield. About 80 Armenian and Georgian generals participated in the war as part of the Soviet army. In the post-war years, Hovhannes Baghramyan, who was awarded the title of Marshal of the Soviet Union, ended the war as the commander of the First Baltic Front with the rank of Army General, Hovhannes Isakov was awarded the rank of Admiral of the Navy, Hamazasp Babajanyan, who started the war with the rank of Major, ended it with the rank of Marshal of Tank Troops, and Sergey Khudyakov received the rank of Marshal of Aviation. Among the Georgian generals who were crowned with glory were Marshal of the Engineering Troops Archil Gelovani, Colonel General Konstantin Leselidze, Colonel General Parpire Chanchibadze, Lieutenant General Vasili Mzhavanadze, Major General Giorgi Kuparadze, and others. Georgian-Armenians also took an active part in the war. It is enough to mention that more than three dozen generals born in Georgia crowned themselves with immortal military glory on the battlefield. From the first day of the war, Major General Grigor Arutyunov, Lieutenant General Ivan Vekilov, Lieutenant General of the Armored Forces Guy Tumanyan, Lieutenant General Stepan Kinosyan, Colonel General of the Medical Service Levon Orbeli, Major General of the Medical Service Artur Kyucharyants, and others were already fighting in the rank of general. Georgian and Armenian fighters participated in the partisan war and the Resistance Movement of the Peoples of Europe. Today, 17,919 veterans of the war are alive in Georgia. On the initiative of the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili, all veterans will receive a one-time benefit of 1,000 lari in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory. Today, on the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory, regardless of the recent widespread trend of revaluation, we bow our heads to all the famous and unknown soldiers who saved the world from the fascist brown plague. We bow our heads and, at the same time, are proud that it was we, our grandfathers, who defended our freedom, our identity, our future at the cost of our lives.
