LET'S LEARN THE CONSTITUTIONAL RULES OF WESTERN ARMENIAN

The richness of a language is not limited to vocabulary and grammatical rules.

Լեզուի մը հարստութիւնը միայն բառապաշարով եւ քերականական կանոններով չի սահմանափակուիր։

Language also has its own punctuation rules, through which the writer presents the meaning and emphasis of a sentence.

Լեզուն ունի նաեւ իր կէտադրական օրէնքները, որոնց միջոցով գրողը կը ներկայացնէ նախադասութեան իմաստը եւ շեշտադրումը։

Therefore, the correct use of punctuation marks is as important as the correct choice of words and grammatical structure.

Հետեւաբար, կէտադրական նշաններու ճիշդ գործածութիւնը նոյնքան կարեւոր է, որքան բառերու եւ քերականական կառոյցի ճիշդ ընտրութիւնը։

In the Western Armenian press, we occasionally encounter punctuation applications that bear the influence of foreign languages, such as English.

Արեւմտահայ մամուլին մէջ մերթ ընդ մերթ կը հանդիպինք կէտադրական այնպիսի կիրարկումներու, որոնք օտար լեզուներու, ինչպէս օրինակ անգլերէնի, ազդեցութիւնը կը կրեն։

One of the most frequently observed errors is the use of the conjunction “and” or “and” immediately after a comma, when the structure of the sentence does not require such punctuation.

Յաճախ նկատելի սխալներէն մէկը ստորակէտէն անմիջապէս ետք «ու» կամ «եւ» շաղկապի գործածութիւնն է, երբ նախադասութեան կառոյցը այդ կէտադրութիւնը չի պահանջեր։

Two homonym sentences are connected by homonyms (and, and, or).

Երկու համադաս նախադասութիւններ կը կապուին (ու, եւ , կամ) համադասական շաղկապներով։

We do not put a comma before these conjunctions, except when the last sentence is different in subject.

Այս շաղկապներէն առաջ ստորակէտ չենք դներ, բացի երբ վերջին նախադասութիւնը ենթակայով տարբեր է։

Examples: from the Armenian press: a- “The “New Dictionary of the Haigazian Language” dictionary was the huge repository that has provided food for more than one hundred and fifty years, and continues to provide food for the formation and development of our world language.”

Օրինակներ՝ հայ մամուլէն.

(Incorrect use of a comma).

ա- «“Նոր Բառգիրք Հայկազեան Լեզուի” բառարանը այն հսկայ շտեմարանն էր, որ անցնող աւելի քան հարիւր յիսուն տարիներու ընթացքին սնունդ տուաւ, եւ կը շարունակէ տալ մեր աշխարհաբար լեզուի ձեւաւորման եւ զարգացման»։

The same subject is in both sentences, therefore the use of a comma before “and continues to provide food for the formation and development of our world language” is inappropriate.

(Ստորակէտի սխալ կիրարկում)։

So we should write: “The “New Dictionary of the Haigazian Language” dictionary was the huge repository that, over the past one hundred and fifty years, has provided and continues to provide nourishment for the formation and development of our world-famous language.”

Նոյն ենթական է երկու նախադասութիւններուն մէջ՝ ուստի «եւ կը շարունակէ տալ մեր աշխարհաբար լեզուի ձեւաւորման եւ զարգացման»-էն առաջ ստորակէտի գործածութիւնը անտեղի է։

b- “Testimonies about the life of the homeland have been abundant, and the achievements recorded by the homeland have been mentioned with importance.”

Ուրեմն պէտք է գրենք՝ «“Նոր Բառգիրք Հայկազեան Լեզուի” բառարանը այն հսկայ շտեմարանն էր, որ անցնող աւելի քան հարիւր յիսուն տարիներու ընթացքին սնունդ տուաւ եւ կը շարունակէ տալ մեր աշխարհաբար լեզուի ձեւաւորման եւ զարգացման»։

Here, since there is a new subject after “and,” a comma can be used before the second sentence.

բ- «Հայրենի կեանքին մասին վկայութիւնները անպակաս եղած են, եւ հայրենիքին արձանագրած նուաճումները կարեւորութեամբ յիշատակուած են»։

Therefore, in order to keep Western Armenian accurate and native, it is important to use each punctuation mark in accordance with its place and purpose.

Այստեղ, քանի որ «եւ»-էն ետք նոր ենթակայ կայ՝ ուրեմն երկրորդ նախադասութենէն առաջ ստորակէտը կարելի է գործածել։

By avoiding the influence of foreign languages, we preserve not only the clarity and beauty of our writing, but also the independent spirit and native face of Western Armenian.

Ուստի, արեւմտահայերէնը ճիշդ եւ հարազատ պահելու համար, կարեւոր է իւրաքանչիւր կէտադրական նշան գործածել իր տեղին ու նպատակին համապատասխան։
