Pashinyan's visit to Moscow will determine the fate of Armenia

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s upcoming visit to Moscow will determine the future of Armenia, according to political scientist and member of the Mother Armenia party Yervand Bozoyan.

He noted that Armenian-Russian relations have been strained in recent months, and the arrests of politicians advocating the normalization of these relations have, among other things, a geopolitical context. Bozoyan is convinced that Pashinyan intends to use this factor during his negotiations with Vladimir Putin.

“The arrested figures are a kind of hostages. Pashinyan wants to use them because he has no trump cards. I think the Russian side will not enter this game and Pashinyan will fail,” the political scientist said, adding that the continued arrests of politicians depend on the outcome of the negotiations in Moscow.

At the same time, he noted that Yerevan understands how painful it would be for society to break off relations with Moscow. Therefore, they are trying to do it gradually, but Moscow has already exposed Yerevan’s game and prevented such a move.

“Everyone should understand that if Armenian-Russian relations are destroyed, Turkey will take Russia’s place,” he said.

Relations between the two countries have recently deteriorated significantly after the Armenian parliament adopted a law initiating the EU accession process, statements about the need to cancel the South Caucasus Railway concession, and other actions by Yerevan. It is also noteworthy that the recently adopted government program for the first time does not mention Russia as a strategic ally or partner. During a meeting in Bishkek on September 1, Vladimir Putin and Nikol Pashinyan discussed the need to hold a referendum in Armenia to resolve the issue of the country’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) or the European Union. However, Yerevan is in no hurry to hold a vote, citing the current lack of an alternative – applying to join the EU.
