Mikael Sarpazan: The cross must be placed first in the heart

In his address on the occasion of the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Archbishop Mikael Ajapakhyan of the Shirak Diocese called on the Cross to be perceived not only as a sacred relic and symbol of the Christian faith, but also as a reminder of spiritual and national responsibility.

According to the archbishop, the history of the Armenian people is inextricably linked with the Cross, but veneration of its external symbol alone is not enough. “The Cross is not just a symbol that must be loved and revered. It is a guarantee of salvation,” Ajapakhyan said. He noted that Armenia is covered with crosses and khachkars, but this in itself does not indicate adherence to the meaning of the Cross. “We erected crosses and khachkars in our homeland, and then we abandoned them and left. Our homeland is covered with crosses, but these crosses today remind us of our duty,” the archbishop said.

Ajapakhyan emphasizes that Christian symbolism should continue in a person’s life – in his actions, responsibility and attitude towards his country. “First of all, the Cross should be placed in our hearts,” said the head of the Shirak Diocese. According to him, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross should be not only a commemoration of the suffering and death of Christ, but also a reminder of the Resurrection and the hope of life.

“The Cross of Christ is death, but after Christ it becomes life and eternity,” the archbishop noted.
