Israel is not Europe: not on the map, not in football, not in Eurovision

Every so often, it's necessary to say aloud what Western diplomacy insists on whispering or outright silencing: Israel shouldn't exist as it does, because its foundation isn't that of a people returning to their land, but rather that of a far-right colonial project built on an imperial gift and sustained through theft and bloodshed.

A state born of plunder, not of history.

Political Zionism didn't emerge as a liberation movement, but as a late 19th-century European nationalist current that found its sponsor in the British Empire. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 wasn't an act of justice: it was London dividing up foreign territory to secure a loyal enclave in the Middle East, just as it drew borders with ruler and compass across half of Africa and Asia. What came after—the Nakba of 1948, the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, the military occupation that has now lasted more than seven decades—is not a war between equals. It is the armed consolidation of that colonial gift. A state that sustains itself on the continuous displacement of another people has no historical legitimacy: it has force, which is not the same thing.

Here, precision is key, because the enemy always takes advantage of confusion. It is true that a large part of the founding Zionist elite was of European origin—Ashkenazi, Central European, Russian. But the ethnic origin of the settlers does not make the colonized territory European. Palestine is in Western Asia, in the Middle East, and neither the genealogy of the occupiers nor the sympathies of Western foreign ministries change that geography. Israel is not European because its founders were, just as South Africa was not European when it was governed by a white minority of Dutch and British origin.

The sporting and cultural complicity.

La complicidad deportiva y cultural.

That is why it makes no sense—sportingly, culturally, or geographically—for Israel to compete in European competitions: not in UEFA, not in Eurovision, not in any continental federation. This is not a bureaucratic whim: it is yet another exception granted by European institutions to a state that, in any other case, would be suspended, sanctioned, or expelled. South Africa was expelled from international sport during apartheid. Russia was expelled from European competitions for its invasion of Ukraine in a matter of days. Israel, while bombing Gaza and expanding settlements in the West Bank, continues to be granted a seat in Europe that it neither geographically nor politically deserves. This double standard is not accidental: it is the same imperial complicity that gave birth to this state that now whitewashes it on a football field or a concert stage.

With Palestine, no exceptions.

Con Palestina, sin excepciones.

There's no need to invent anything: simply apply to Israel the same criteria that were applied to other regimes of exclusion and occupation. Out of European competitions, out of the whitewashing of sports and culture, and in full solidarity with the Palestinian people who have resisted for over seventy years those who displaced them from their own land with the blessing of a decaying empire.
