Representatives of the main Armenian religious institutions in the United States, along with the Armenian ambassador to the US, Narek Mkrtchyan, met with President Donald Trump at the White House, where they offered a prayer for Armenia, the United States, and the US president, and discussed bilateral relations, religious freedom, Christian ties, and peace efforts.

The delegation included Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church; Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan, Primate of the Eastern Diocese; and Archbishops Anoushavan Tanielian and Kegham Khatcherian, leaders of the Eastern and Western Prelatures of the Great House of Cilicia, respectively.

During the meeting, the religious representatives and Trump discussed relations between Armenia and the United States, the state of religious freedom, Christian ties, and peace efforts.

Derderian's participation came amid tensions between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government and the Armenian Apostolic Church. In January, the archbishop joined a government-backed church initiative and challenged Catholicos Karekin II.

For his part, Aram Hamparian, executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), questioned the scope of the meeting at the White House and maintained that these types of encounters do not replace conversations with civic organizations of the Armenian-American community.
