Russia expels a group of Hungarian diplomats in response to the expulsion of Russian diplomats

Russia has ordered a group of employees of Hungarian diplomatic missions to leave the country in response to the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Hungary.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Hungarian Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in the Federation, Gabor Gergich, was summoned to the department. A strong protest was filed with the Hungarian side regarding the Hungarian authorities’ demand to expel a number of Russian diplomatic employees from the country on September 8, 2026.

“The Hungarian diplomat has been informed that as a countermeasure, a group of employees of the Hungarian Embassy in Moscow, the Hungarian Consulates General in St. Petersburg and Kazan must leave the territory of the Russian Federation within two weeks,” the statement said.

Hungary had earlier announced the expulsion of ten Russian diplomats. The country's Foreign Minister Anita Orban stated that employees of the Russian diplomatic mission engaged in activities that are unacceptable for diplomats according to the Vienna Convention.
