Hungarian parliament votes to strip prime minister of immunity

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the prime minister is suspected of stealing a phone.

In June 2024, the future prime minister got into an argument with a visitor at a Budapest club. After the man filmed the politician on his phone, Magyar snatched the device, put it in his pocket, and later threw it into the Danube River.

At the time, Magyar was still a member of the European Parliament, but in response to an application by law enforcement agencies, the Council of Europe refused to lift his immunity.

Later, when he became a member of the Hungarian parliament in May 2026, the country’s prosecutor’s office decided to lift the politician’s immunity in Hungary in order to resume the investigation.
