More than 45,000 students in about 100 cities in Germany have protested against the possible restoration of compulsory military service

Tagesschau, citing the “School Strike Against Conscription” initiative, reported that the demonstrations took place on September 25.

The Munich demonstrators chanted: “Not a single person, not a cent to the Bundeswehr.” The banners read: “Leave us alone” and “No, we will not go.” One of the protesters said he had already received a summons to appear for a military medical examination.

New rules for military service in Germany came into effect in January 2026. Men and women who have reached the age of 18 will receive a questionnaire about their readiness for military service. Filling it out is mandatory for men, and voluntary for women. Mandatory medical examinations have already begun for men born in 2008.
