On September 17, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) joined the process after the emergence of cases of gastroenteritis among kindergarten students in Georgia.
According to the center, the clinical course of the patients is currently favorable, none of the cases have caused dangerous complications, most of the children are in the recovery phase and will soon return to their normal routine.
Since the morning of September 18, information has spread that dozens of children attending a public kindergarten in Tbilisi have appeared in the clinic with signs of poisoning.
The children were complaining of vomiting and abdominal pain. Later, on September 19, the Minister of Health said that “the number of children hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning from the kindergarten has exceeded about 100.”
Preliminary laboratory results indicate that the cause of the majority of cases was, with a high probability, norovirus.
According to the NCDC, the mentioned pathogen is the leading cause of viral gastroenteritis worldwide. Norovirus is responsible for 40-45% of viral gastroenteritis cases in Georgia.
