From Hayk to Argentine archery: the bow and arrow in the Armenian tradition

Every August 11th, Armenian tradition commemorates Hayk's victory over Bel and marks this event as the beginning of their ancient calendar. In this narrative, the bow plays a central role: it is the weapon with which Hayk is said to have defeated the tyrant and secured freedom for his people.

To mark the Armenian New Year 4519, Eduardo Karsaclian and Adolfo Aidician reconstructed the relationship between this mythical figure and the practice of archery in Argentina, based on an interview with lawyer and international law specialist Roberto Malkassian.

The story of Hayk was recorded by ancient Armenian historiography and later incorporated into Christian tradition, which presented him as a descendant of Noah through Japheth. In the version passed down for centuries, Hayk leaves Bel's domain, travels north with his family and followers, and finally confronts the Babylonian ruler. An arrow shot by Hayk kills Bel and decides the battle. According to tradition, that battle took place in August of 2492 BC and marks the beginning of the Armenian calendar.

The bow thus became linked to the figure of Hayk and, through him, to one of the foundational Armenian narratives. The work of Karsaclian and Aidician recalls that in ancient Armenian translations of the Bible, the constellation Orion was identified with Hayk and represented as the figure of an archer.

The research continues in Argentina with the story of Roberto Malkassian. The son of survivors of the Armenian Genocide, he was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, and arrived in the country in 1957, when he was ten years old. In the interview, he recalls that during his solitary childhood in a house with a large garden by the sea, he made his own toys and felt a particular attraction to bows and arrows, which he fashioned from branches.

An article published by La Nación in 1970 brought archery back into his life. The article showed a small group of enthusiasts practicing along General Paz Avenue. There were no specialized clubs or an organized federation yet. Malkassian went to meet them and began training with them.

Among those first archers was Roberto Rocca, founder of Techint, who offered to teach him the technique and the rules of international competitions. Malkassian recalls that in those early days, the targets were simply bales of hay placed in the middle of the grasslands, and that when an arrow missed its target, they had to go out and retrieve it from the vegetation.

While finishing his studies at the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires, Malkassian promoted the sport there. He obtained bales of hay, targets, and bows, put up posters to attract students, and began to form a group of archers. Shortly afterward, he founded the University Archery Club (CUDA), dedicated to the sport.

The activity continued to grow. Archery sections were established in various clubs in Buenos Aires, La Plata, and Rosario, and shortly thereafter, progress was made in organizing a national federation. Malkassian also participated in the efforts to formally incorporate the discipline into the Argentine Olympic Committee.

The report also recounts that, when the Armenian New Year 4500 was celebrated, Sergio Kniasian contacted CUDA to participate in the commemoration dressed as Hayk and reenact the confrontation with Bel.

In the Armenian imagination, Hayk's bow represents the decision to break with Bel's dominion and defend the freedom of his people. This is why archery has also maintained a symbolic place within the traditional celebrations of Navasart.

Today, archery is a widespread sport in Argentina and is included in the Olympic Games. Among those who practice it are also descendants of Armenians who find in Hayk a reference to the history and tradition of their people.
