The "Hrant Dink" Distinction

La distinción "Hrant Dink"

This distinction, awarded by the Armenian National Council of South America, is presented on Journalist's Day, celebrated in Argentina every June 7th. Since 2001, the Armenian community organization has recognized outstanding journalists “in recognition of their careers in defense of human rights and republican institutions, and in gratitude for their unwavering solidarity with the Armenian Cause.”

Since 2007, the award has been named after Hrant Dink, an Armenian journalist who was a victim of Turkish nationalism and was murdered that same year in Istanbul, Turkey, as he left the offices of the newspaper Agos, of which he was the editor. “He was one of the bravest and most independent voices in that country. He gave his life defending freedom of expression and human rights in a country where violence and intolerance toward minorities are constant, and which pursues a policy of state denial regarding the Armenian Genocide,” the organization explains.
