Astronomers have discovered the youngest exoplanet ever recorded, Elias 2-24 b, which is estimated to be less than a million years old. The Jupiter-mass planet is located about 450 light-years from Earth and is still surrounded by the disk of gas and dust where it formed.
The discovery was made by examining ancient archival data. The scientists obtained it using the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii. The youngest exoplanets previously known were more than 5 million years old.
