NASA discovers new crater on the Moon bigger than the Colosseum in Rome

Scientists have discovered a crater on the Moon larger than the Colosseum in Rome, which was formed as a result of the collision of an asteroid or comet fragment with the Moon in 2024. This was reported by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The crater is about 222 meters in diameter and up to 43 meters deep. It was discovered by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which recorded changes in the lunar surface in April-May 2024. The collision was not observed in real time by telescopes, and the first photos were identified only in August 2025.

The crater is named after Thomas McGutchin, former director of the Lunar and Planetary Science Institute in Houston. It is three times the size of the previous record crater recorded by LRO 10 years ago. Researchers estimate that such a large-scale impact occurs approximately every 130 years.

Data analysis showed that the ejected particles of lunar soil were spread over a radius of more than 100 km, and the angle of propagation of the material was greater than expected.

LRO has been operating in lunar orbit since 2009 and monitors its surface in preparation for future human missions.

The agency plans to use the new data to assess the risks of building a future lunar base.
