The Gospel, looted from Ethiopia in 1868, is up for sale for 250,000 euros

An 18th-century Ethiopian Gospel manuscript, stolen during the Battle of Magdala in 1868 and linked to the royal collection of Emperor Tewodros II, has been offered for private sale in Abu Dhabi for 250,000 euros.

The manuscript is written in Ge’ez on parchment and dates to 1730-1740. Scholars believe the manuscript is a unique royal manuscript from the imperial library of Magdala. Cultural heritage advocates are calling on diplomatic representatives to engage in direct dialogue to prevent the private sale.

With the short deadline for the Abu Dhabi sale, Ethiopian cultural heritage experts are calling on the international community to intervene immediately to remove the manuscript from the sale and return it to Ethiopia rather than letting it go into private ownership.
