Zurab Uchumbegashvili, Chairman of the Poultry Development Association (Koda, Kumisi, Dila, Savaneti) and co-founder of Kumisi, cites excess production in neighboring Turkey, whose products are sold on the Georgian market, as the reason for the increase in egg imports to Georgia.
This year, egg imports to Georgia have increased almost 28-fold. From January to July 2026, table chicken egg imports increased sharply: Georgia purchased 18.8 million eggs worth $1.36 million. By comparison, during the same period in 2025, the country imported 683,000 eggs worth $36,300.
The bulk of eggs imported in the first seven months of 2026 came from Turkey—17.4 million eggs worth $1.2 million. Georgia imported another 1.46 million eggs worth $146,700 from Belarus.
As Zurab Uchumbegashvili explains, last year Turkey primarily supplied eggs to the United States, whereas this year a significant portion of the surplus production is once again being directed to the Georgian market. He notes that the lower cost of imported products is creating difficulties for local producers.
"Last year, there were virtually no imports until the end of November and December, as Turkey was sending its surplus production to the United States. The United States was experiencing bird flu; it was a large and expensive market, so the products were sent there.
This year, the situation in America has stabilized, Turkey has again remained within its borders, and, accordingly, the surplus production has again gone to Georgia. Since this surplus production is coming from Turkey and is being unfairly priced, it is therefore cheaper than our production cost, creating problems for us.
But we continue to rely on our own resources, and at this stage we have no complications. It's not easy for us, but so far there are no other alarming circumstances," the association's chairman stated.
According to him, egg prices remain stable, and annual production growth is expected to be 5-6%.
"As for prices, we're seeing stability, as the lari is very important and has remained stable for quite some time. Furthermore, grain prices are very good. At this point, wheat is so cheap that it has neutralized all other factors that create obstacles—fuel prices, labor costs, and so on.
Last year, it was 693 million, and annual production this year will likely exceed 700 million. This means we'll likely see growth of approximately 5-6%," stated Zurab Uchumbegashvili.
