West of the Norwegian island of Fedje, on the seabed, at a depth of about 150 meters below the surface, lies a piece of German military history - the submarine U-864, which has remained there for more than eight decades, divided into two parts and carrying a cargo that still poses an environmental threat. Euronews reports.

According to historical documents, the submarine U-864 was transporting a large amount of mercury. The order received from Japan called for 1,867 containers. The mercury remained in the wreckage of the submarine after the shipwreck.

In February 1945, when World War II was entering its final phase, the U-864 continued to carry out a special mission. The German submarine was assigned to reach Japan. In addition to military and technical equipment, it also had a large amount of mercury on board, but the submarine was wrecked off the coast of Fedye in the same year.
