Himalayan glaciers are rapidly losing mass

Glaciers in the Himalayas are melting at an accelerating rate, glacial lakes are becoming more unstable, and monitoring of the region is still inadequate, according to a new study. Himalayan glaciers are now losing mass 65% faster than they were a decade ago, according to a report by consulting firm Systemiq. At the same time, only about 21 of the region’s approximately 40,000 glaciers are monitored in detail and continuously.

The retreat of glaciers can lead to the expansion of lakes, whose natural barriers are made of unstable rock and ice. Their collapse can cause major floods. About 18% of India’s land area is located in the Himalayas, but according to the report, about 35% of the country’s disasters occur in this region. In 2023, a flash flood in Sikkim caused by the collapse of a glacial lake killed at least 70 people.

The study also estimates that the Himalayan water resources provide about 20% of India's GDP, playing a crucial role in agriculture, hydropower, tourism and other sectors.
