The meeting was organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Armenia in the United States and the White House Office of Faith. This connection does not have a one-day history. Back in January, the embassy organized a reception dedicated to the Armenian Christmas and the 250th anniversary of US independence at the National Cathedral in Washington, which was attended by representatives of the White House Office of Faith and leaders of Armenian church structures. On September 4, Ambassador Narek Mkrtchyan met again with the head of the Office of Faith, Paula White-Kane.

Հանդիպումը կազմակերպվել է ԱՄՆ-ում Հայաստանի դեսպանության և Սպիտակ տան Հավատքի գրասենյակի համագործակցությամբ։ Այդ կապը մեկ օրվա պատմություն չունի։ Դեռ հունվարին դեսպանությունը Վաշինգտոնի Ազգային տաճարում հայկական Սուրբ Ծննդին և ԱՄՆ անկախության 250-ամյակին նվիրված ընդունելություն էր կազմակերպել, որին մասնակցել էին Սպիտակ տան Հավատքի գրասենյակի ներկայացուցիչները և հայկական եկեղեցական կառույցների առաջնորդները։ Սեպտեմբերի 4-ին դեսպան Նարեկ Մկրտչյանը կրկին հանդիպել էր Հավատքի գրասենյակի ղեկավար Փոլա Ուայթ-Քեյնի հետ։

The White House Office of Faith is an official structure of the presidential staff, established in 2025. Its functions include relations with religious communities and coordination of issues related to religious freedom.

Սպիտակ տան Հավատքի գրասենյակը նախագահի աշխատակազմի պաշտոնական կառույց է, ստեղծված 2025 թվականին։ Նրա գործառույթների մեջ մտնում են կրոնական համայնքների հետ կապերը և կրոնական ազատությանը վերաբերող հարցերի համակարգումը։

Against this background, today's Oval Office meeting no longer gives the impression of a separate episode. It shows a direction of work that the embassy has been building over the months.

Այս ֆոնին Օվալաձև գրասենյակի այսօրվա հանդիպումն արդեն առանձին դրվագի տպավորություն չի թողնում։ Այն ցույց է տալիս աշխատանքի մի ուղղություն, որը դեսպանությունը կառուցել է ամիսների ընթացքում։

The internal life of the Armenian community in the United States has never been homogeneous. There are different church structures, party traditions, organizations, centers of influence, old disputes and new contradictions. Much of the history of Armenian-Americans has been spent in this diversity. Sometimes it has given strength to the community, sometimes it has fragmented its voice.

Հայկական համայնքի ներքին կյանքը Միացյալ Նահանգներում երբեք միատարր չի եղել։ Կան տարբեր եկեղեցական կառույցներ, կուսակցական ավանդույթներ, կազմակերպություններ, ազդեցության կենտրոններ, հին վեճեր և նոր հակասություններ։ Ամերիկահայության պատմության մեծ մասը հենց այդ բազմազանությամբ է անցել։ Երբեմն այն ուժ է տվել համայնքին, երբեմն էլ մասնատել է նրա ձայնը։

The peculiarity of this Oval Office meeting lies precisely here. People representing different directions of Armenian spiritual life have gathered around one table, and their common address has become the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia.

Օվալաձև գրասենյակի այս հանդիպման առանձնահատկությունը հենց այստեղ է։ Մի սեղանի շուրջ հավաքվել են հայկական հոգևոր կյանքի տարբեր ուղղություններ ներկայացնող մարդիկ, իսկ նրանց ընդհանուր հասցեն դարձել է Հայաստանի Հանրապետության դեսպանությունը։

This is a serious result for diplomacy.

Դա դիվանագիտության համար լուրջ արդյունք է։

The work of an embassy is not only to organize meetings of state officials or transmit documents. The embassy of a country with a powerful Diaspora is also a communication hub between the Armenian state, the community, and the political system of the host country. The work of Washington in recent months provides a fairly visible example of this function.

Դեսպանության գործը միայն պետական պաշտոնյաների հանդիպումներ կազմակերպելը կամ փաստաթղթեր փոխանցելը չէ։ Հզոր սփյուռք ունեցող երկրի դեսպանությունը նաև կապի հանգույց է՝ Հայաստանի պետության, համայնքի և ընդունող երկրի քաղաքական համակարգի միջև։ Վաշինգտոնի վերջին ամիսների աշխատանքը ցույց է տալիս այդ գործառույթի բավական տեսանելի օրինակ։

This story also has an internal Armenian significance.

Այս պատմությունն ունի նաև ներքին հայկական նշանակություն։

In recent years, there have been protests from various groups against the Armenian Embassy and the Armenian authorities in the United States. Political disagreement is a natural part of a democratic society, and no photograph eliminates the right to such protests. However, this shot of the Oval Office complicates another claim: the attempt to present the Armenian Embassy as an institution isolated from the community.

Վերջին տարիներին ԱՄՆ-ում Հայաստանի դեսպանության և Հայաստանի իշխանությունների դեմ տարբեր խմբերի բողոքներ են եղել։ Քաղաքական անհամաձայնությունը ժողովրդավարական հասարակության բնական մասն է, և նման բողոքների իրավունքը որևէ լուսանկար չի վերացնում։ Սակայն Օվալաձև գրասենյակի այս կադրը դժվարացնում է մեկ այլ պնդում՝ Հայաստանի դեսպանությունը համայնքից մեկուսացված կառույց ներկայացնելու փորձը։

Leaders of various Armenian church structures entered the office of the President of the United States with the Armenian Ambassador and came up with a common agenda that unites the interests of Armenia and the Armenian people.

Հայ եկեղեցական տարբեր կառույցների առաջնորդները Հայաստանի դեսպանի հետ մտել են Միացյալ Նահանգների նախագահի աշխատասենյակ և հանդես եկել Հայաստանի ու հայ ժողովրդի շահերը միավորող ընդհանուր օրակարգով։

In diplomacy, symbols are sometimes no less important than practical facts. Entering the Oval Office in itself does not change policy, does not ensure peace, and does not resolve conflicts, but it demonstrates the level of accessibility, the quality of relations, and the ability of the state to represent.

Դիվանագիտության մեջ խորհրդանիշները երբեմն գործնական փաստերից պակաս նշանակություն չունեն։ Օվալաձև գրասենյակ մտնելը ինքնին քաղաքականություն չի փոխում, խաղաղություն չի ապահովում և հակասություններ չի լուծում, բայց այն ցույց է տալիս հասանելիության մակարդակը, հարաբերությունների որակը և պետության ներկայացուցչության կարողությունը։

This circumstance is especially important for Armenia. In relations with the Diaspora, the state has long often found itself in the middle of communal conflicts. As a result, the name of Armenia has sometimes been identified with a given government, party, or individual group. This is a dangerous deviation for any state.

Հայաստանի համար այս հանգամանքը հատկապես կարևոր է։ Սփյուռքի հետ հարաբերություններում պետությունը երկար ժամանակ հաճախ հայտնվել է համայնքային հակասությունների ներսում։ Դրա հետևանքով Հայաստանի անունը երբեմն նույնացվել է տվյալ իշխանության, կուսակցության կամ առանձին խմբի հետ։ Դա վտանգավոր շեղում է է ցանկացած պետության համար։

The embassy is the representation of the Armenian government, but the presence of the Republic of Armenia in Washington does not end there. The flag of the embassy is the flag of the Republic of Armenia, and the ability of this institution to work with various Armenian circles is measured precisely by moments like these.

Դեսպանությունը Հայաստանի կառավարության ներկայացուցչությունն է, սակայն Վաշինգտոնում Հայաստանի Հանրապետության ներկայությունը դրանով չի սպառվում։ Դեսպանության դրոշը Հայաստանի Հանրապետության դրոշն է, և այդ հաստատության կարողությունը տարբեր հայկական շրջանակների հետ աշխատելու հարցում չափվում է հենց նման պահերով։

The value of this meeting lies in this simple image: it is possible to gather around the state people who do not always stand in the same positions in community life.

Այս հանդիպման արժեքը հենց այդ պարզ պատկերում է․ պետության շուրջ հնարավոր է հավաքել մարդկանց, որոնք համայնքային կյանքում միշտ նույն դիրքերում չեն կանգնած։

The strength of the Armenian-American community has been formed for decades through the work of churches, charitable institutions, parties, individual benefactors, and public organizations. The existence of an independent statehood of Armenia has added to this system a center that has international legal status, diplomatic representation, and the authority to speak to states.

Ամերիկահայության ուժը տասնամյակներ շարունակ ձևավորվել է եկեղեցիների, բարեգործական կառույցների, կուսակցությունների, անհատ բարերարների և հասարակական կազմակերպությունների աշխատանքով։ Հայաստանի անկախ պետականության գոյությունը այդ համակարգին ավելացրել է մի կենտրոն, որն ունի միջազգային իրավական կարգավիճակ, դիվանագիտական ներկայացուցչություն և պետությունների հետ խոսելու լիազորություն։

The photo of the Oval Office is a very simple reminder of this reality.

Օվալաձև գրասենյակի լուսանկարը հենց այդ իրողության շատ պարզ հիշեցումն է։

The Armenian community can have many voices. The Armenian state has one address in Washington, and the ability to unite people around that address is the real capital of Armenia's diplomacy.

Հայկական համայնքը կարող է ունենալ բազմաթիվ ձայներ։ Վաշինգտոնում Հայաստանի պետության հասցեն մեկն է, և այդ հասցեի շուրջ մարդկանց միավորելու կարողությունը Հայաստանի դիվանագիտության իրական կապիտալն է։
