Fiji declares HIV a national crisis

Fiji has declared the spread of HIV a national crisis after the number of newly diagnosed cases rose by 27% last year. The figure, Reuters reports, deepens concerns that the epidemic, previously concentrated mainly among people who inject drugs, is spreading more widely in the country.

The Fijian government said in a statement on Facebook that 2,016 people will be diagnosed with HIV by 2025, an estimate that means one in every 60 adults is living with the infection. The government said 59 babies were born with HIV last year, 18 of whom died before the age of one.

The authorities say expanded testing has helped detect new cases of infection and allowed them to start treatment earlier. Fiji now plans to expand access to free, voluntary and confidential testing, preventive medicine, and harm reduction services and treatment for people who inject drugs.

With a population of nearly 900,000, Fiji is one of the countries with the fastest growing number of new infections in the world. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), in 2025, 9,100 people in Fiji were living with HIV, of whom only 39% knew their status.

More than half of these cases were sexually transmitted, and more than 42% were due to injecting drug use.
