BOSTON — The annual reconfiguration of the Abstract Sculpture at Armenian Heritage Park on the Greenway took place on Sunday, October 18. With the assistance of a crane, the two halves of the sculpture, a split rhomboid dodecahedron made of stainless steel and aluminum, were lifted, pulled apart and reconfigured to create a new sculptural shape, symbolic of a new life. Tellalian, AIA, the park’s architect/designer. The process of pulling apart and reconfiguring the Abstract Sculpture (Mark Hoffman photo) The Abstract Sculpture, atop the Reflecting Pool, is dedicated to the lives lost during the Armenian Genocide and all genocides that have followed. Its annual reconfiguration serves as a continuing reminder of resilience, renewal and the journeys of those who pulled away or were forced to pull away from their countries of origin and came to these Massachusetts shores, establishing themselves in new and different ways. Conceived by Tellalian as an evolving work of public art, the Abstract Sculpture takes on 25 distinct geometric forms over a quarter-century before the sequence begins anew. “The sculpture’s reconfiguration reflects an enduring idea at the heart of Armenian Heritage Park: that a strong sense of identity allows us to embrace new possibilities while remaining true to where we come from,” said Vahan Dilanyan, director of development and programming at the Armenian Heritage Foundation, sponsor of Armenian Heritage Park on the Greenway. “It is a message that speaks beyond the Armenian community, reminding us all that the future takes shape through what we carry forward.” The annual reconfiguration is supported by the Charles and Doreen Bilezikian Endowed Fund.
