Foreign Minister Mirzoyan says Armenia is ready to sign peace treaty with Azerbaijan in 2026 October 28, 2026 Siranush Ghazanchyan armradio.com 1 minute read Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ararat Mirzoyan said that Armenia is ready to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan as soon as possible, including by the end of 2026. Speaking in parliament, Mirzoyan rejected claims that the peace process was being delayed, arguing that peace had already been established on the ground, although the treaty formalizing it remains unsigned. “Peace cannot be delayed because peace has already been established,” Mirzoyan said, pointing to trade and cargo transportation between Armenia and Azerbaijan as evidence of the functioning of peaceful relations. Addressing the timing of the peace treaty, the minister said the Armenian government had consistently expressed its readiness to begin consultations on determining the time and place for signing the document, even after the text was initialed. “We have said that at any moment we are ready to start consultations to determine the time and place of signing,” he said. Mirzoyan added that the government had committed itself to securing the signing of the treaty within its term in office. He referred to previous statements that the agreement could be signed as early as the end of 2026 or in 2027. “Our political mission – and personally my political mission – is until the end of our mandate,” Mirzoyan said, referring to the government’s five-year term. The foreign minister also addressed Azerbaijan’s position that the peace treaty cannot be signed until Armenia’s Constitution is changed. He argued that Baku does not formally present this as a demand during negotiations but instead states that it will not sign the agreement until the constitutional issue is resolved. “Azerbaijan does not put this demand or condition before us during the negotiation process,” Mirzoyan said. “Simply, when we say, ‘Let’s sign,’ they say, ‘You know, until your Constitution is changed, we will not sign.’” He acknowledged that Armenia must take Azerbaijan’s publicly stated position into account, while stressing that the two sides do not necessarily share each other’s views. He maintained that Azerbaijan was informing Armenia that it could not proceed with signing until the constitutional issue was addressed, rather than formally demanding that Armenia make the changes as part of the negotiations.
