Barbed wire has been installed around the Armenian St. Gevorg Monastery in Kharberd in an effort to prevent its complete destruction. According to the source, St. Gevorg Monastery, located in the village of Holvenk in Kharberd and built in the 6th century, has been left to its fate. Once a large monastic complex before the genocide committed against Armenians, St. Gevorg became a settlement for displaced people brought there after 1915. During the period of the Committee of Union and Progress, the monastery was allocated to Sadık Erzen, a soldier in the Hamidiye regiment brought to Kharberd from Bitlis, and it gradually began to fall into ruin. Members of the regiment repeatedly damaged the monastery while searching for treasure. The sanctuary was later targeted by treasure hunters as well, and almost nothing remains of it. The only surviving parts of the monastic complex are its ruined walls and cracked columns. The site has been used by people holding picnics, who have left it heavily polluted. Some of the mulberry trees around the monastery have also been cut down. Eventually, local authorities decided to install barbed wire around the monastic complex to protect its ruins.
