Yerevan /Mediamax/. Welcoming UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the Government, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that COP17 is the largest event ever held in Armenia and that Guterres is the second UN Secretary-General to visit the country. Government s press office reported that Ant nio Guterres arrived in Armenia to participate in the Leaders Summit held within the framework of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in Yerevan. During the meeting, Pashinyan highlighted the importance of the cooperation between Armenia and the UN over the past eight years, noting that significant developments had taken place both in the region and globally during this period. The premier said that the UN s role had remained central to various discussions, while the importance of multilateralism had been a constant subject of debate in the international arena. It seems that many international players are keen to see multilateralism, fully understanding the role of the UN. Unfortunately, however, we see unilateralism in many places, and the global situation is becoming increasingly complex. Fortunately, though, in our region after navigating very difficult events we have managed to turn the situation around, and our primary goal now is to reach the final stage. I am referring to the signing and ratification of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. That is our main objective, and we must focus on it; while achieving it is not easy, we must remain as focused as possible on that goal, Pashinyan said. Guterres, in turn, thanked for warm hospitality and the excellent organization of COP17. I would like to congratulate Armenia, as this conference has been organized exceptionally well. My colleagues tell me that reaching a joint statement or agreement during negotiations is always difficult. Armenia has demonstrated extraordinary diplomatic skill working wonders by bringing together diverse opinions and perspectives. Across all areas where COP operates such as biodiversity and climate the quality of Armenian leadership and diplomacy truly stands out, the UN Secretary-General said. Ant nio Guterres also underscored the importance of establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, highlighting Pashinyan s personal contribution to the process. The sides also discussed regional developments, including progress in the implementation of the TRIPP project.
