CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Dr. Asadur Jorge Tchekmedyian of Uruguay assumed the presidency of the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) for the 2026–2028 term on September 26, , during the closing and presidential transition ceremony of ENDO 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa. The transition was marked by the symbolic passing of the WEO crystal globe from outgoing President Dr. Lars Aabakken. WEO is an international umbrella organization serving the global digestive endoscopy community. It brings together regional organizations such as the Interamerican Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED), the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), and the Asian Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE), together with its member societies across the five continents. He will serve for two years. Tchekmedyian is a Uruguayan gastroenterologist and digestive endoscopist. He leads the Digestive Endoscopy and Gastroenterology services at Asociación Española in Montevideo and has more than 25 years of work in colorectal cancer screening and interventional endoscopy. He served as President of SIED from 2018 to 2021 and as President of the Uruguayan Society of Gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE) and SIED (FSIED), and has served as an external expert/advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He has participated in many conferences in Armenia, as well. His inaugural message organizes the term around three priorities: Connect, Train, Care. The focus is on strengthening connections among societies and endoscopists, making education more accessible across regions, and keeping patient care at the center of endoscopy. In his comments, he said, “Ultimately, everything we do must return to the patient. Behind every procedure, there is a person trusting us with their care. That is why Connect and Train exist. And care must also extend to one another — to our colleagues and teammates. We have seen our colleagues stand by their communities through earthquakes, natural disasters, and human-made crises around the world,” he said. “WEO must keep us together — through science, solidarity, and a shared sense of humanity.” The post Uruguayan Armenian Doctor Named President of World Endoscopy Organization appeared first on The Armenian Mirror-Spectator .
