The woman who defended her children from an Azerbaijani soldier in Syunik refuted Nikol Pashinyan's lies: "If I hadn't resisted, we wouldn't have survived."

Ani Avetisyan, the 39-year-old Armenian woman who was seriously injured defending her children from an attack by Azerbaijani soldier Nasimi Musayev in the village of Shaki, Syunik province, on October 1, recounted the details of the confrontation for the first time in an interview published on October 12 by Radio Azatutyun. From the Yerevan hospital where she remains hospitalized, the victim contradicted statements made by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who had questioned her decision to intervene to protect the children instead of waiting for the police. She also denounced the authorities for failing to warn local residents about the presence of an armed Azerbaijani soldier who had illegally crossed the border.

“If I hadn’t made that decision, neither I nor my child would be here now,” said Avetisyan, who lost the thumb on her left hand, suffered serious injuries to other fingers, and was shot in the leg during the confrontation.

The woman explained that the Azerbaijani soldier had entered her home while she was away from Shaki and held her children hostage for approximately 15 minutes, until she returned from Sisian.

Upon arriving home, she found the soldier pointing a firearm at one of the children. According to her testimony, Musayev fired three times during the attack.

“I moved forward, I saw him pointing at the child. I moved forward, he saw me, pointed at me, fired once, I missed, at that moment I moved forward... he held it so he could hit my son. I grabbed it with my hand, I hurt my hand,” she recounted.

Avetisyan explained that she tried to prevent the soldier from shooting her son and that, while grabbing the weapon, she was shot, sustaining serious injuries to her left hand.

The confrontation continued when the soldier threw her onto a bed and attacked her again. The woman tried to defend herself with a knife and asked her daughter to open the door so the children could escape.

“At that moment, he put the gun to my chest to shoot. I quickly lowered the weapon, and he hit me in the leg. By then, I was on the ground. While I was on the ground, he tried to shoot again. He saw there were no bullets in the machine gun, or something, and tried to reload it,” she recalled.

According to Avetisyan, the soldier tried to reload the weapon before leaving the house. The children then told her that the attacker had escaped.

“The children said, ‘Mom ran away…’ After that, my aunt arrived, and after about five minutes, the police arrived,” she recounted.

The woman noted that throughout the entire confrontation, the soldier remained silent and didn't even know she was an Azerbaijani citizen.

“He didn't exchange a single word; he simply did his job silently,” she stated.

Avetisyan's testimony directly contradicted the interpretation Pashinyan presented on October 7 during a question-and-answer session in the Armenian National Assembly.

On that occasion, the Prime Minister described the incident as a common crime and maintained that the woman should have waited for the security forces to arrive.

"I understand that maternal instinct is strong, but when the police are called, we must wait for them to act," Pashinyan stated.

The head of government had also asserted that if the family had waited for police intervention, nothing would likely have happened.

However, according to Avetisyan's account, when she arrived at her home, the Azerbaijani soldier was already holding her children and pointing a firearm at one of them. The woman claimed that her intervention prevented the attacker from shooting the child.

The victim also questioned the security conditions in Syunik and the lack of warnings to the population about Musayev's presence.

Authorities stated that they launched search operations after receiving this information. However, Musayev remained at large until October 1, when he entered the Avetisyan family home and carried out the attack.

Avetisyan claimed that the residents of Shaki received no warning about the danger.

"If I had been warned, I wouldn't have sent the children to school, we wouldn't have stayed in Shaki," she stated.

Avetisyan also questioned the delay of the police after her family requested assistance.

She explained that the Sisian police station was closer to Shaki than the location from which she had returned home. Despite this, she arrived before the officers.

“If they knew since the 29th of the month that an Azerbaijani had arrived, how is it possible that they didn't come running immediately after receiving the alert?” he asked.

The victim's statements echoed the questions already raised by his sister, Arpi Avetisyan, who had previously denounced Pashinyan for downplaying the seriousness of the attack and rejecting the characterization of the soldier as someone who had simply gotten lost.

The case also raised questions about Armenian security authorities for failing to locate the soldier during the two days following Baku's warning.

Defense Minister Suren Papikyan previously acknowledged shortcomings in the operation and assured that there would be consequences, although authorities have yet to explain how Musayev managed to cross the border and reach Shaki.
