The EAEU's attractiveness depends on access to the Russian market – Aram Sargsyan

The attractiveness of the Eurasian Economic Union depends on access to the Russian market, Aram Sargsyan, chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia and coordinator of the "Miasin" ("Together") movement, stated during a teleconference from Astana to Moscow, Minsk to Bishkek, Yerevan to Tashkent, with the Sputnik Armenia multimedia press center present.

According to him, the EAEU integration scheme should attract new countries.

По его словам, интеграционная схема ЕАЭС должна привлекать новые страны.

And this depends on a key issue: how current members of the Union utilize the Russian market, on which the economies of other countries largely depend.

А это зависит от ключевого вопроса: как действующие члены Союза используют российский рынок, от которого во многом зависит экономика остальных стран.

Armenia has undoubtedly received certain preferences within the EAEU; its GDP has more than doubled since 2015, when it became a member.

Армения, бесспорно, получила в ЕАЭС определенные преференции, ВВП страны за годы членства в союзе, с 2015 года, вырос более чем вдвое.

But if the Eurasian Union competes with other unions, then we must consider why post-Soviet countries, as the most likely potential candidates, are not seeking to join.

Scientific and industrial cooperation is also important for strengthening Eurasian integration, as it will enable investment in each other's economies and foster common economic interests within the Eurasian five countries, the leader of the Democratic Party emphasized.

Для укрепления евразийской интеграции важна также научная и промышленная кооперация, которая позволит инвестировать в экономики друг друга и формировать в странах евразийской пятерки общие экономические интересы, подчеркнул лидер Демпартии.

Regarding the elections between the EAEU and the EU, the politician believes that any decision to change the integration association, especially such a radical one, cannot be made without thoroughly assessing all the pitfalls.

Kubatbek Rakhimov, Executive Director of the Applicata – Center for Strategic Solutions Public Foundation (Bishkek), noted that industrial cooperation and protecting the interests of Eurasian Union producers are one of the principles around which the Eurasian Union was created.

The EAEU was supposed to act as a "semiconductor," allowing profitable goods to enter the market while protecting markets from goods from China, India, Turkey, Bangladesh, and other countries (which are difficult to compete with, particularly in price – ed.).

In particular, there are investors interested in establishing new automotive assembly plants in Kyrgyzstan, but without protection from Chinese goods, such a project is doomed to failure, Rakhimov added.
