The findings of a study titled “Sustainable Agriculture and Workers’ Protection: Effective Management and Safe Use of Pesticides in Agriculture – A Trade Union Position Paper” will be presented during the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17). The event was initiated by the Confederation of Trade Unions of Armenia. The presentation will take place on October 20. The study was conducted by the Confederation of Trade Unions of Armenia in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation’s office in Armenia and the JUSTUS Research and Consulting Foundation. The main objective of the study is to examine the challenges associated with pesticide use in agriculture from the perspective of workers’ rights and occupational safety and health, and to develop an evidence-based trade union position. The position paper aims to strengthen the capacity of Armenian trade unions to engage more effectively in agricultural and environmental policymaking, with a particular focus on workers’ rights in relation to pesticide use. The initiative is expected to enhance the role of trade unions in Armenia in reducing the overall risks posed by pesticides, thereby contributing significantly to the achievement of Target 7 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The session will present the scope and methodology of the participatory research conducted to develop the position paper, the rationale behind evidence-based data collection and analysis, and the study’s findings. The session is important for highlighting progress in the transition to sustainable agriculture and the protection of workers in Armenia, as well as for presenting effective mechanisms for trade union involvement in agricultural and environmental policymaking. Furthermore, presenting the research findings will provide an important impetus for broader discussions on the importance of strengthening the role of trade unions, and on the mechanisms through which they can contribute to achieving Target 7 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in similar contexts.
