The US military is considering a possible resumption of large-scale military operations against Iran, despite ambiguous statements by US President Donald Trump about the prospects for a return to active combat operations, The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing unnamed US administration officials.

According to the newspaper, three aircraft carriers will soon be deployed to the Middle East.

The Pentagon is also developing plans to strike missile and drone depots, as well as other military and energy facilities.

In recent months, the Pentagon and Trump's national security team have presented the American leader with five proposals for large-scale military operations against Iran or the Yemeni rebel movement "Ansar Allah".

The US president has rejected all of them, the newspaper reported.
