"WE HANDED OVER THE MANAGEMENT IN PEACE" - INTERVIEW WITH LILIAN BALIAN, AFTER 6 YEARS AT THE HEAD OF THE ARMENIAN COMMUNITY OF CORDOBA - LA VOZ.

Lilian Balian served as president of the Armenian Community of Córdoba for six years.

Lilian Balian fue presidenta de la Colectividad Armenia de Córdoba durante seis años.

She took office in the midst of the pandemic, navigating one of the most difficult periods for the Armenian community with the conflict in Artsakh, while simultaneously strengthening the community's ties with universities, public institutions, and younger generations.

Le tocó asumir en plena pandemia, atravesar uno de los momentos más difíciles para la comunidad armenia con el conflicto en Artsaj y, al mismo tiempo, profundizar la relación de la colectividad con universidades, organismos públicos y nuevas generaciones.

Now, with her term completed and the leadership in the hands of a new board, she reflects on a tenure that, she defines, was never individual: "I can't say it was my own doing; it was always a collective effort."

Ahora, con su mandato cumplido y la conducción en manos de una nueva comisión directiva, hace un balance de una gestión que, según define, nunca fue individual: “No puedo decir que es una gestión propia, sino que siempre fue todo colectivo”.

Her assessment rests on three words she repeatedly emphasizes: education, openness, and continuity.

El balance que hace se apoya en tres palabras que repite: educación, apertura y continuidad.

Armenian Roots.

Raíces armenias Explicar su relación con la comunidad armenia es importante para ella.

Explaining her connection to the Armenian community is important to her.

Su historia familiar está profundamente atravesada por la diáspora: sus abuelos, tanto maternos como paternos, llegaron a Argentina en barco, después de dejar atrás hogares y familiares.

Her family history is deeply intertwined with the diaspora: both her maternal and paternal grandparents arrived in Argentina by boat, having left behind their homes and relatives.

En Córdoba, su familia encontró cobijo y un motor para reconstruir sus vidas.

In Córdoba, her family found refuge and a driving force to rebuild their lives.

Y destaca especialmente el acceso a la educación pública, que, según cuenta, llegó a sus padres, tíos, hijos y nietos.

She especially highlights access to public education, which, she says, was available to her parents, uncles, children, and grandchildren.

“Si no fuera por esos abuelos, por Córdoba y el cariño de la gente y por la educación pública, no estaríamos acá”, dice.

“If it weren't for those grandparents, for Córdoba, the affection of its people, and for public education, we wouldn't be here,” she says.

Sus hijos fueron quienes la impulsaron a involucrarse en la comunidad.

Her children were the ones who encouraged her to get involved in the community.

“Queremos devolverle a Córdoba todo lo que nos dio”, cuenta que le dijeron.

“We want to give back to Córdoba everything it has given us,” she recounts them telling her.

Sin conocer demasiado sobre las instituciones y la vida pública, comenzó a participar.

Without knowing much about the institutions and public life, she began to participate.

Luego de un tiempo, la convocaron a formar parte de la comisión de la colectividad como vocal.

After a while, she was invited to join the community's committee as a member.

“Aceptar fue un desafío, porque yo me conozco: cuando digo que sí, trabajo con todo mi corazón; es como cuidar a un hijo”, admite.

“Accepting was a challenge, because I know myself: when I say yes, I work with all my heart; it's like taking care of a child,” she admits.

Six Years in Office Summarizing six years in a few words is difficult, but Balian explains that one of the objectives of her administration was to streamline the institution's administrative operations.

En ese sentido, destaca la incorporación de nuevos equipos profesionales, el trabajo con abogados y contadores, y una mayor bancarización de las operaciones.

In that regard, she highlights the addition of new professional teams, working with lawyers and accountants, and increasing the use of banking services for transactions.

“Ordenar todas las arcas, la gestión, toda la parte administrativa” fue uno de los principales desafíos que enfrentó durante estos seis años.

“Organizing all the finances, the management, the entire administrative process” was one of the main challenges she faced during these six years.

La arquitecta también menciona el trabajo de apertura hacia otras instituciones de Córdoba, especialmente en el ámbito educativo.

The architect also mentions the work of opening up to other institutions in Córdoba, especially in the educational field.

La colectividad también profundizó durante su gestión los vínculos con la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba y con la Universidad Provincial de Córdoba, donde se desarrollaron seminarios sobre genocidio, cultura armenia, arquitectura, música, arte y aspectos jurídicos.

During her tenure, the community also deepened its ties with the National University of Córdoba and the Provincial University of Córdoba, where seminars were held on genocide, Armenian culture, architecture, music, art, and legal aspects.

En esa misma línea, uno de los proyectos que destaca Balian es la incorporación de la quinta hora en el colegio armenio, con el fin de ampliar las oportunidades educativas de los alumnos y prepararlos para los niveles posteriores.

Along the same lines, one of the projects Balian highlights is the addition of a fifth period at the Armenian school, with the aim of expanding students' educational opportunities and preparing them for higher levels.

“Todo lo que se hace hacia afuera repercute en el adentro”, sostiene.

“Everything done externally has repercussions internally,” she maintains.

Para ella, fortalecer los vínculos con universidades, gobiernos y otras instituciones significa prestar atención y mejorar el lugar que ocupa la colectividad en Córdoba.

For her, strengthening ties with universities, governments, and other institutions means paying attention to and improving the community's standing in Córdoba.

El compromiso de los jóvenes Otro de los aspectos que menciona Balian es la incorporación de jóvenes a la vida institucional de la Colectividad Armenia.

The Commitment of Young People Another aspect Balian mentions is the incorporation of young people into the institutional life of the Armenian Community.

En ese sentido, explica que durante su gestión logró conformar grupos de jóvenes que, en la mayoría de los casos, no estaban tan vinculados a sus raíces, o al menos no tenían contacto directo.

In this regard, he explains that during his tenure he managed to form groups of young people who, in most cases, were not very connected to their roots, or at least did not have direct contact with them.

A través de proyectos y de actividades, unos 20 jóvenes se sumaron a la comunidad de manera activa.

Through projects and activities, some 20 young people actively joined the community.

Hoy, muchos de ellos forman parte de la Comisión Directiva de la colectividad.

Today, many of them are part of the community's Board of Directors.

“Es muy importante esta nueva fuerza, este redescubrimiento de las raíces.

“This new energy, this rediscovery of our roots, is very important.

Creo que tiene un plus y nos llena de otra perspectiva para ser mejores argentinos y cordobeses”, afirma.

I think it has an added value and gives us a different perspective to be better Argentinians and Cordobans,” he affirms.

The Responsibility of Being Armenian What does it mean to be Armenian in Córdoba today?

Para Balian es, fundamentalmente, mantener vivas la identidad y la memoria.

For Balian, it is fundamentally about keeping identity and memory alive.

“Pensar y educar” son dos de las claves.

“Thinking and educating” are two of the keys.

En ese sentido, la memoria del Genocidio Armenio ocupa un lugar importante en esa tarea.

In this sense, the memory of the Armenian Genocide occupies an important place in this task.

“Nunca Más” es un lema del cual se apropió la comunidad y con el que busca repudiar cualquier forma de persecución y exterminio.

“Never Again” is a motto adopted by the community, which seeks to repudiate any form of persecution and extermination.

Balian también piensa que hay que seguir tendiendo puentes entre Córdoba y Armenia a través del arte, la cultura, las tradiciones y la educación, y también compartirlos con el resto de la sociedad.

Balian also believes it's essential to continue building bridges between Córdoba and Armenia through art, culture, traditions, and education, and to share these with the rest of society.

“Nosotros siempre decimos que tenemos esa doble función porque respondés a tus raíces y las elevás sabiendo que estás viviendo en Córdoba”,

“We always say we have this dual role because you respond to your roots and elevate them, knowing you're living in Córdoba,” she says.

Y ahí es donde aparece el desafío al que se enfrenta la colectividad con las nuevas generaciones: fomentar la preservación del vínculo con una historia familiar que en muchos casos comenzó varios años atrás, pero desde la mirada de quienes nacieron, estudiaron y construyeron su vida en Córdoba.

And that's where the challenge the community faces with new generations arises: fostering the preservation of the connection to a family history that, in many cases, began many years ago, but from the perspective of those who were born, studied, and built their lives in Córdoba.

Tras seis años de gestión, Lilian Balian confía en lo que sigue para la Colectividad Armenia: “Creo que es propio de una buena gestión tratar de que la próxima brille más que la anterior”.

After six years in office, Lilian Balian is confident about what lies ahead for the Armenian Community: “I believe that good leadership aims to make the next one shine brighter than the last.”
