Joe Manganiello reveals his seven-year battle with a mysterious autoimmune disease that he says nearly cost him his life.

For seven of the last ten years, the actor secretly battled a mysterious autoimmune disease so virulent that it nearly took his life.

In his new memoir, Bloodlines (out October 13), Manganiello, 49, speaks candidly about his recovery from a battle with the disease that led to the amputation of a vital organ and contributed to the end of his seven-year marriage to actress Sofia Vergara, 54: “I can’t believe I’m alive,” he says.

It all started with excruciating abdominal pain that left him unable to walk due to an ulcer in his digestive tract, along with fever, blistering rashes, headaches, and fatigue.

“I just kept getting sicker and sicker,” he says.

Over the course of seven years, Manganiello lost 60 pounds, underwent countless colonoscopies, and, in emergency surgery in 2016, had part of his intestines removed, leaving him unable to have a normal bowel movement and requiring him to wear an ostomy bag.

“None of them worked,” he says.

Forced to turn to hydrocodone pills, fentanyl patches, and marijuana to ease his suffering, Manganiello struggled to maintain his hard-won 13 years of sobriety.

“I didn’t feel like I deserved to say I was sober,” he recalls, “but I had to prioritize the pain and the illness.”

As Manganiello went from hospital to hospital searching for answers, his illness took a toll on his marriage, which, he writes, had become “completely devoid of emotion.”
