For the first time, an Armenian expert will sit on the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This is the first time an Armenian has joined this international body tasked with monitoring States' compliance with their commitments to protect the rights of persons with disabilities.

C’est la première fois qu’un Arménien rejoint cet organe international chargé de veiller au respect des engagements des États en matière de protection des droits des personnes handicapées.

From 2027, Hovsepian and the other committee members will analyze reports from various States and civil society organizations, hear from government representatives, and formulate recommendations for States.

À partir de 2027, Hovsepian et les autres membres du comité analyseront les rapports des différents États et de la société civile, entendront les représentants des gouvernements et formuleront des recommandations à l’intention des États.

The committee is also empowered to examine individual complaints, following a procedure similar to that of the European Court of Human Rights, and to develop official interpretations of the articles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, taking into account the wide diversity of political and cultural contexts worldwide.

In accordance with the ethical rule aimed at preventing conflicts of interest, committee members may not participate in discussions or decisions concerning their own country.

According to Hovsepian, the protection of the rights of people with disabilities is currently experiencing a decline worldwide, partly due to armed conflict and climate change.
