The issue of Armenian prisoners of war was included in the draft resolution of the European Parliament at my suggestion: Marina Mezure

French MEP Marina Mezure is also planning to raise the issue of Armenian prisoners held in Baku during the discussion.

Yesterday, during the last negotiations, I managed to include Armenian prisoners in the text.

Երեկ՝ վերջին բանակցությունների ժամանակ, ինձ հաջողվեց տեքստում ներառել նաև հայ բանտարկյալներին։

I know that this issue would normally be considered outside the scope of the resolution, but I said, since we are talking about political prisoners in Azerbaijan, we should also talk about Armenian political prisoners.

Գիտեմ, որ այս հարցը սովորաբար բանաձևի շրջանակներից դուրս կհամարեին, բայց ես ասացի՝ քանի որ խոսում ենք Ադրբեջանում քաղբանտարկյալների մասին, պետք է խոսենք նաև հայ քաղբանտարկյալների մասին։

According to the MP, during the preliminary discussion, she had proposed that the document also address the visits of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Baku and the EU Special Representative to Nagorno-Karabakh, but that suggestion was not accepted.

“The resolution reaffirms that any future EU-Azerbaijan partnership agreement must be conditional on improvements.

I would also have preferred to see a wording expressing regret that during recent high-level visits to Azerbaijan, EU representatives did not call for the release of political prisoners.

According to Mezure, the main message of his speech is that now it is necessary not only to adopt new resolutions, but to act.

Following the visit of EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Magdalena Grono to Nagorno-Karabakh, Marina Mezure sent a letter to the European Commission, protesting the fact of the visit and the language used by the EU diplomat.

Sometimes they say: ‘Yes, but the Armenian government has adopted certain positions.’

I am not commenting on the position of the Armenian government, I am commenting on the position of the international community.

The international community has a duty to uphold international law.

Mezure says that, along with the issues of prisoners and cultural heritage, attention is not paid to the right of return of the people of Artsakh.

According to him, during his visit to Armenia and meetings with the displaced, he understood how strong their demand for return is.
