Marseille, youth still and always present

111 years after the Armenian Genocide, the commemorations once again drew large crowds, blending reflection, commitment, and the passing on of memory to new generations. Proof of this was the exceptional presence of French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu at the republican ceremony on April 24th.

On April 21st, an initial ceremony was held at the Bouches-du-Rhône Departmental Council building, at the initiative of its president, Martine Vassal. This solemn occasion, attended by elected officials and representatives of various associations, served to reaffirm the importance of the duty of remembrance within the institutions of the Republic. The following day, April 22nd, the city of Marseille once again offered a powerful and highly symbolic image. At the initiative of Mayor Benoît Payan, the Palais du Pharo was illuminated in the colors of Armenia. Facing the harbor, several hundred Marseillais gathered to witness this historically significant illumination. It was indeed through this port that, in the 1920s, thousands of Genocide survivors found refuge. A century later, the city of Marseille continues to fully embrace this legacy, its legacy.

But beyond the symbols, it was the mobilization of young people that marked these commemorations. On the eve of April 24th, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (FRA) Nor Seround and the Armenian Genocide Union (AGBU) organized a commemorative and protest march, bringing together more than 500 people, the majority of them young. The procession set off from the Armenian Apostolic Church in Beaumont to the Genocide Memorial, passing by the roundabout where the bust of Soghomon Tehlirian stands, an emblematic figure of justice for having avenged the Armenian people by executing the main instigator of the Genocide, Talaat Pasha. Torches in hand, emotion and determination on their faces, bearing witness to an undiminished commitment to justice.
